often is thought to be an accident or suicide In 1953 Sgt Major Frederick EmmiettDunne of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers was stationed with result of hanging but rather had been killed by an extreme ly vicious blow to the throat EmmettDunne was ar rested and under provision of the army act was returned to Germany to fact court mar tial for murder The trial began in June 1955 While EmmettDunne pleaded not guilty it was apparent from the outset that Watters had not committed suicide Emmett Dunne had halfbrother Private Ronald Emmett He heated until finally the smaller man pulled out pistol Fred claimed that the pistol was aimed straight at his head In desperate gamble to save his life Fred stated that he slowly was able to extend his arm br ing it back in wide arc in an attempt to strike Watters on the side of the head in order to stun him and gain possession of the pistol Instead of the vicious blow landed squarely on his adver sarys throat Watters slumped over in Sgt Major Emmett Dunne together with Quarter master Sgt Fry found Watters hanging from beam in the barracks There was rope around his neck and an over turned bucket at his feet His distraught buddies cut him down An army doctor thoroughly examined the body and was satisfied that death was due to selfinflicted strangulation Watters was written off as suicide and that should have beenthat Two thngs happened which served to shed new light on the apparent suicide Watters friends in the service felt that he just wasnt the type of fellow to commit suicide for any reason Those who had been in contact
