recently retired Shes now about to spend some time with her husband Bud who just retired from his position at Canadian Forces Base Borden Mrs Mason was presented with $92 from the 50 children and staff of the nursery Monday to be given to the Masons foster child in Korea The couple has bought house in St Petersburg Fla where they will spend the winter months think its time stepped down and let someone else have go at it Mrs Mason said The nursery located at 203 Bayfield St is now owned by Barrie Free Methodist Church Director is Joan Huby member of the congregat ion Mrs Mason has worked with children most of her life She opened her home in Stayner as nursery when her children were small took in other children for half day programs said the mother of Glenn Judy and Elizabeth now living away from home She was also school teacher for 10 years in the New Liskeard area and took course at the institute of child Study in Toronto once taught in school where there were 52 pupils from Grade to Grade 10 when you served them hot lunches at noon she said That was an experience lm glad had When the family lived at 203 Bayticld St the location ot the nursery she opened her home to group of children whose parent worked There was great need for nursery schools many couples were working she said She started it first as the Tiny Tots Club but within three years the club expanded from handful of six to full size nursery Now 50 children attend the nursery and are cared for by eight staff members Although she had the 50 to contend with she says it was unlike an institutionalized nursery arranged it so the children were divided into groups of 10 and were under the supervision of one staff member think that gave it more homelike feeling she said an environment sometimes sacrificed in larger institu tionalized nurseries Children need to see the place as their home she said Rules are partandparcel of growing up she says and she never enforced rules unless they were practical and understandable had simple rules just wouldnt let them disturb the other children Nothing stringent about that And she made rapport little easier by letting the children call her and the staff by their last names thought it would avoid the confusion of the Mrs and Miss you get used to it she said Nora Rosso staff member at Tiny Tots nursery said she ran the nursery like home iii stead of school shell be missed The children liked her very much She had the oldfashioned philosophy of raising children Parents should not be afraid to set limits and they should be consistent Mrs Mason
