production of Shakespeares Richard III on Wednesday night the un doubted highlight of this 25th Stratford Festival season As the humpbacked vil lainous duke who usurped the throne and died on Bosworth Field to end the War of the Roses Bedford commanded ev ery scene in which he appeared Except for his scarlet corona tion robe Richard III was cos tumed in evil black holding one blackgloved and supposedly wizened hand in his lap But what Bedford could do with his one good hand and thunderous voice only occasionally drop ping to whisper electrified the audience Sharing in the ovation were the actresses playing the Three Queens the ones who suffered most from Richards mur ders Maggie Smith as Elizabeth widow of King Ed ward IV Martha Henry as Lady Anne who briefly became Richards wife until she was quickly put to death when he no longer needed her and Margaret Tyzack as Queen Margaret widow of Edwards predecessor Henry VI Modern historians say that Richard III was not all as bad as Shakespeare and older histo rians painted him But as Phil lips said months ago when the season was being prepared he was directing Shakespeares play not history LEADERSHIP COLLAPSES And the play is
