plazas to raise funds for their muscular dystrophy campaign And they want people to understand giving is voluntary They don tgo doortodoor and put pressure on people to donate says campaign chair man Colin Crook What they do is stand in sun and rain at the exits of shopp ing centres People give what they want if they want to says Crook They can make the choice whether to stop and give or not he says Most people give he says Out of whole two days there are few who refuse he said Ive only come across one in the last two years He says people relaize the MI campaign is valuable one because the dealing in muscle chemistry 22 in neurology and nine in genetics They are doing massive amount of research with chickens and are almost to the point where they have cured the problem in chickens Crook Chairman of MD campaigns says were given instructions about different rundraising methods during the conference says Crook Barrie operates on the toll galte system because it doesnt demand long manhours he says We can have men there for 12 hours and earn between $300 and $400 an hour said Crook BOOTH LOCATIONS Tool booths will be set up bet ween and 930 pm Friday at the Wellington Simcoe and Bayfield shopping centres the liquor store on Mary Street and the beer store on Anne Street Saturdays hours will be 10 am to pm Barrie firefighters will not be at the Georgian Mall because it is out of the city limits says Crook That is covered by the Vespra firefighters Barrie has been using the toll gate system since 1970 says publicity director Bill Jeffers We have been collecting since 1963 and we were using the plastic round bubble that sat on store counters he said That method only collected about $300 year In 1970 Ajax the only Ontario group to try toll booths came to Barrie to teach firefighters how the system works Crook says he has since con sidered doing teethon but has dismissed the idea as im practical Everything you do has to be for nothing he said and dont think we could get the thing going on that basis He says MD organizers stress as little money as possible should be spent on the fund raising efforts VOLUNTEERS One nice thing about our charity is that its one manned by volunteers he said Barrie will have 50 men at the toll booths working in shifts both full and parttime firefighters says Crook Theyll be there whether it rains or shines The rain ac tually stabbing death of her husband The Rama Reserve woman was charged with second degree murder and was on trial before jury in special Supreme Court of Ontario assize sitting The seven man five woman jury accepted the lesser plea after day and half of testimony Mrs Sawyer was arrested June 16 when her husband Or ville was foend dead in their home bs police and neighbors He had stab unds in his arm and chest Witnesses testified Mrs Sawyer said stabbed him at the scene after day of heavy drinking and arguing They said she spoke of Orville hitting her on the arm when when she was preparing sand wiches for him She was holding butcher knife Mr Justice Stark crown attorney John Madden and defense counsel Richard Clarke agreed with the lesser plea Madden said the couples drunken condition was deciding factor TESTEI ALCOHOL LEVELS Brechin OPP tested Mrs Sawyer and blood samples were taken from her husband for alcohol levels Madden said tests showed she had 230 to 240 milligrams of alcohol in her blood while he had 360 Police say anyone with 80 or over is impaired Mr Justice Stark said murder is when someone causes death or injury that will lead to death on purpose while manslaughter refers more to an act not intended to cause death Even from the little evidence we have heard you members of the jury must have felt she didnt deliberately set out to slay her husband he said She had been provoked by an earlier incident witnesses testified to in which Orville was found in tent with 21year old girl who was also drunk What could be more pro vocative then that said Mr Justice Stark one of the first in the house after the stabbing said she saw butcher knife on the table and an incision in Or villes chest near the heart She testified Mrs Sawyer came to her house asking for help and an ambulance and kept repeating she had hurt her husband in an accident She said Orville was saying things to her while she was making the sandwiches said Mrs Stinson She said she called him bastard and said thats when hit him she said Alma Stinson said Mrs Sawyer tried to tell her what had happenned She said he hit her on the arm and said was just trying to scare him she testified She said she didnt realize he was standing so close So she done it Flora Stinson said despite Mrs Sawyers statements she was making sandwiches at the time of the stabbing there was no food on the table or BRUCE Examiner Staff Reporter BARCLAY lnnisfil Townships 1977 public works budget will have to be com pletely reworked because the ministry of transportation and communications has given th township about $20000 less than the township expected in sup plementary grants Deputyreeve Blake Con stable chairman of the public works committee said Wednes day that the township has received supplementary sub sidy allocation of $24600 Thats about $20000 less than what we asked for he said But in terms of the public works budget it means loss of about $40000 he added Constable said the township set the 1977 levy for public works based on the higher grant The levy of $650381 was set in the township budget unveiled last Friday When the public works conr mittee sits down to reconsider its budget Constable said one of the first things to go will be metric conversion of all highway speed and mileage signs in the township NOGRANT The township learned Wednesday that its application for young Canada Works Pro gram grant of $6100 to hire students to do the conversion work this summer had been turned down by the federal government The provincial government has ordered all municipalities in Ontario to convert their highway signs to metric units by Sept 30 1977 However Constable said he is not worried that the province will cut back on its grants to In nisfil Township next year if the
