inspection of the safety of the playground equipment at local schools next week The board approved 30point memoran dum on playground safety at its regular meeting Wednesday The memorandum provides specific guidelines for installation construction and maintenance and they apply to community oonstructed playgrounds as well as those erected by the board Dave Harvey superintendent of maintenance and operations said the depart ment has been checking uipment for some weeks already The latest evelopment mere ly formalizes the areas of concern He added that he expects all the playgrounds will conform to the guidelines by the reopening of school next fall Local concern for playground equi ment safety was heightened after the deat this spring of Jennifer Sheardown in the play area at Shanty Bay School The coroners jury at an inquest into the death had recommended that all playground equipment be properly anchored and checked by qualified personnel of the board at least twice year It suggested removal of any equipment con sidered safety hazard weekly safety checks more adult supervision in the yards and development of clearer outline of safety procedures which would thenbe submitted to principals The board has integrated all recommenda tions into its list of guidelines Only one differs slightlyinstead of weekly checks the board has instructed that one member of staff
