black let ters SPACE FOR RENT You can say what you want said mother but shes certainly well read Pollys Eointers Turn ties IRONED into quilts DEAR POLLY have heard of people making beautiful quilts from old ties but do not know how to put them together to make quilt wonder if you or some of the readers have pattern for making such quilt or other ideas for using old neckties KATHY DEAR KATHY The charm of such quilt is mainly dependent on your own originality First open clean and press the ties to see how many you have and if there are enough for an entire quilt or just for appliques on plain squares With quantity of ties one could make an oldfashioned crazy quilt such as our ancestors did Pieces could be cut in squares or rectangles sewed together on the wrong side and then brimstitched on the top over the seams sunburst star or other design could be appliqued to squares that would be later sewn together on the wrong side Carefully place the design on foundation square pin and then haste before sew ing Always join such pieces from the center out for nice true result POLLY DEAR POLLY My Pet Peeve is With advertisers and others who print instructions etc with black letters on dark background admit do have eye trouble but have heard others with good eyes make the same complaint RUTH DEAR POLLY am an professional registered engineer answering Mrs CLR who wants to repair her old pump type reed organ am pleased to advise her that the best way to restore these old organs is to install an electric suction fan to take the lace of the bellows WDS DEAR OLLY Today almost everyone wears wig at one time or another One of the problems is hair escaping par ticularly in front of the ears This is more often the case with the new short wigs and with the petite head sizes cut off one foot of old panty hose about 14 to 16 inches from the toe and stretch this over my hair tuck it in and roll it up as far as want secure the back and sides of the hose with bobby ins although it holds firm without them Put the wig over this air holder and find no hair shows The wig also stays in place tighter and does not slip MRS ABS DEAR POLLY If you would like to keep your thin sliced bacon from curling up lay it flat on the griddle and then pull up in two or three places to make puckers The bacon will not curl up but will look crisp and nice after being cooked slowly EDNA
