sports wheel StOp wasting the ice time Chayl The Arena Board is raising the rates for ice time by 20 per cent and the Minor Hockey Association will probably feel the pinch But does the Minor Hockey Association require all the ice time that they use in Barrie It is my opinion that they dont Not only is minor hockey using too much ice time but so are teams such as the Flyers and the Colts Why does six or seven yearold need push ups and other exercises when on the ice The average child from 612 gets more exercise in day than the average adult gets in week so why waste time on the ice with exercises And why do coaches waste time by standing at one end of the ice with all the players around him telling them what they are going to do in the way of skating drills and such All these plans for the ice time can be made off the ice and routine laid out ahead of time All exercises can be done off the ice as well In the older leagues when player comes to camp in the fall he should be ready to play hockey He should be in top physical condition as well as in top mental condition and that is the way they would be if they knew that the coach ex pected them to be ready to play But what happens Hours and hours of ice time are taken up by coaches getting their players into condition and many have hard time condi tioning themselves in cold arena It is much easier to condition oneself outside in the fresh air during the month of August and be ready to start right in when season begins without punishment to the body and mind Roger Neilsorr who did great job for several years coaching the Peterborough Petes and who is considered one of the best hockey coaches in the game would write letter to the players invited to camp suggesting how they should train He stated in the letter that the players should report to camp ready to play hockey and that the camp was not camp for conditioning spent time watching Roger at the Petes camp for two straight years The players who report are put on teams and they start right in playing hockey There was no wasted ice time as there is in Barrie during camp or tryouts for the Flyers or Colts In city the size of Barrie with only two arenas ice time is very valuable not only to hockey players but to figure skaters and pleasure skaters There are also many young people who like to play game of pickup hockey but some of them have to drive many miles so that they can get ice time to have little enjoyment in the sport they love yet maybe they werent quite good enough to make regular team So why not do away with all the skating exercises and puships and long talks and use the ice for playing hockey Even with the raise in rates it would not cost the clubs as much and it would give ice time to others in the community who would use it for enjoyment And when you consider that the main source of income for the upkeep of the arenas is from the taxpayers why then shouldnt they be able to get little use of the ice If some of these hockey players who say they have to skate to get in shape want few lessons in conditioning please contact me will ptit you on program on the first of August without ice and guarantee you will be in shape by the first week in September But it will not be program for lazy hockey players or people who wont listen Fair will help women in sport Lets get your community in volved appears to be tl theme of Experience 77 Program Women in Recreation Judy Perkin of Barrie and Sadie van Beest Creemore are introductory clinics in various part of the County assisting an individual or groups of girls
