record collectors clubs gathered at the home of Cairns in Thornton on Saturday for their annual con feronce The purpose of the con ference was to discuss recent findings trade information and buy and sell records The clubs involved were the West Mississauga Jazz Muddys and the Montreal Vintage Jazz Society Collectors from Toron to Pittsburgh Rochester Mon treal Burlingon Kitchener and other places attended We try to get down to the roots and foundation of rec ords Cairns says Research is the main thing trying to put together as much about people and artists of music as possible while they are still alive Jazz as we know it today was the popular music of the 20s Caims explained That was the type of music the ina jority of people listened to airns has been collecting for the past 10 to 12 years and has more than 20000 records in his collection One complete wall in his record room which is about 30 feet long contains six rows of shelves full of the older 78 records which are not made anymore HAS TURNTABLES As well he has four turn tables player piano numerous old gramaphones and many books on jazz He said it is hard to know whether or not he has the only copy of any one record You can often find out how many copies were printed but during the war so many were melted down its impossible to find out how many The curator of the National Record Library of Ottawa Ed Moodk was at the conference He is the author of Roll Back the Years history of the recording industry in Canada and Canadian recording artists up to 1930 Lou Hooper Canadian jazz artist was present for the day long session and received scroll in appreciation for his contribution to jazz from the group Bernard Lemaitre Aurora has large collection of jazz records He has done television shows for the CBC and the BBC on the subject of jazz His col lections contain such records as Benny Goodman before he played the clarinet and the Original Dixieland Band Cairns said records of his grandmothers day are the ones which are rare During the 205 and early 305 records didnt sell too well because of the depres sion So the ones which were sold are usually rare Not all are though There are some records for which there are lot of copies TESTS IN COLLECTION Test pressings of records which were never issued are also among the Cairns collec tion His search for originals has taken him all over the United States including of course New Orleans Some collectors specialize in just plain volume others specialize in only real rare things or sheet music and some collect just for the sound alone and are content to have much of their collection on tape Mr Cairns says he prefers or iginal 73s He has the original recordings of Bix Beiderbccke Louis Armstrong and Glen Mil ler to name just few Radio transcript records which measure 16 inches across are part of the Cairns collection as well presentation on the history of the first Canadian indepen dent record pressing plant the Compo Record Co of liachine Que was presented by flank Fleishman one of the Montreal club members tracing the 50 years of the company Ross Brethour Aurora gave slide and sound presentation on the career of Mart Kenney wellknown Canadian bands man from the early 30s to his 1975 appearance at the fana dian National Exhibition Brethour has spent years researching and gathering material on the background of Kcnney and has compiled 180 page book of his findings but cant get anyone to publish it They are willing to publish the exploits of those who de stroy our world but not those who have added so much to our culture he said IIII IS TICAGARDIIN Joe Showlcr of Toronto has been collecting lac leagarden since 1064 What started as hobby is now an obsession he said have about 1000 785 of Teagardens and about 300 LPS His search for the back ground of Teagarden has also taken him through the States met most of his family and they were more than helpful giving me personal things of his and lots of stories and informa tion about him Unlike lot of collectors Showlers hobby is beginning to pay off He is regular guest on the June Caldwell show and has been asked back for the next season On the show be dis cusses jan and shows short film clips from his collection He says his advice to an one wanting to take up the hob of collecting records would be to first decide on who or what they wanted to collect The first step would be to go to place like the Jazz and Blues Record Centre in Toron to They have real good selec tion of records from which person could possibly make up his mind who his favorite artist or artists are This is the cheapest and easiest way to find out who you really like Once that is decided then there are people in the States who have huge record collections and are willing to Sell know of one man who has 100000 records in his home You have dinner by the pool first and then you visit the record room Just make sure you have thick wallet NYOILETOR Bob Fertig from New York was present
