appeared to be the aftermath of an inside party fight with his leader While many no doubt feel Horner didnt use too good judgment in changing sides Joe Clark might have prevented the situation from happening with little diplomacy The Tory leader rubbed salt in another open wound when he stripped David MacDonald of his seat on the Conservative political strategy committee because Mr MacDonald followed his own conscience and voted against an immigration bill which both the Liberals and Tories supported Mr Clark has demanded that all members of his shadow cabinet follow the party line difficult for me to write column in defence of the press largely because am embarrassed by the amount of time we all devote to this particular project But in the light of Jack llorners conversion or defection to Liberalism along with the recent criticisms of the Conservative party by Quebec Tory MP Jacques Lavoie think its fair to say few words on behalf of the media You see the press has been taking quite battering for alleged rumor mongering as the principals in these cases toyed with various forms of denials have heard callers to openline radio shows say all sorts of horrible things about irrespon sible reporters in the last few weeks Whats our press coming to some would ask Imagine how any intelligent reporter could suggest that Jack Horncr could possibly become Liberal Sometimes the caller would snicker Other times there would be anger at the way the press kept persisting despite statements from Mr Homer and Prime Minister Trudeau that there were no plans for conversion or defection And know the reporter who wrote story in the Ottawa Citizen on March 23 about the possibility of Homer becoming Liberal cer tainly became the victim of some highlevel sneers professor of geology tells me one of the reasons he quit long ca reer in the oilbusiness was because he was appalled that Canadian oil pumped out of the hard ground of Western Canada in 15 below maintained were of little interest in the boardrooms of the United States of the oil giants He also reminded the lack of response and fer dont think it would be unfair to review fcw highlights of the TORONTO Election notes The New Democratic Party has what would appear to be an excellent candidate in Mid diesex Gordon Hill has long been prominent in agriculture in Ontario He was founding member of the old 0n tario Farmers Union He has served on multiplicity of govem ment boards and marketing boards He has been vicepresident of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and from 19701976 was president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture There hasnt been more prominent far mer in Ontario in recent years and on his stature he would seem to be shooin in Mid dlesex which today is one of the few dominantly rural ridings in Ontario FARMERS ANTI However apparently it is not this simple For one thing Hill doesnt live in the riding he is being parachuted in And then farmers tend to be antiNDP and Hill has been CCFNDP all his life In fact Bob Eaton the incumbent Progressive Conservative member says he welcomes Hills capacity His main opposition he says has been the Liberals and will bethe Liberals And he figures that Hills candidacy will cut into the Liberal vote not his The NDP of course would do practically anything to get strong farm member in the house They know that without cutting into the rural vote they can hardly form govern ment But though Hill is probably the strongest rural candidate they have ever put forward their hopes of rural representation still would seem to be dim LIBERAL ORE And the Liberals despite their apparently low estate manage to retain some optimism They dont expect to improve or even hold their own but they do expect to retain solid core representation One veteran goes so far as to say they will hold 25 of their present 34 seats This would seem bit too hopeful But it wouldnt be surprise to see them come back with 20 members Exports hit by problems By BOB BOWMAN These days there are problems between Canada and the United States over the export of oil natural gas hydroelectric power automobile parts and other products There have been similar problems over the years which have been solved without serious troublceserious enough that is to lead to war About 100 years ago fishing rights caused great concern and almost led to fighting There was an unusual situation that arose after April 25 1910 when Quebec prohibited the export of pulpwood The reason for the restriction was not because of scarcity but an attempt to induce other nations to build paper manufacturing plants in the province The US was hardest hit and retaliated by raising the duty on paper imported from Can ada Perhaps the Quebec policy paid dividends in the long run because many of the leading newsprint plants in Canada were built by US interests Some of the most famous news papers in the US including the New York Times Washington Post and Chicago Tribune are printed on Canadian paper There was period in early Canadian history when even the export of wheat was prohibitedbut that was case of scarcity OTHER APRIL 25 EVENTS lowHunting permits had
