Belleville Ont was arrested by Toronto police Saturday He had been serving twoyear sentence for possession of stolen goods wor th over $200 Officials say still at large from the minimumsecurity prison is David Brydon 28 of Zurich Ont who was serving three years for revocation of mandatory supervision twist into the Commons on Monday as MP5 returned from an 11day Easter break As debate on the March 31 budget was to resume the Pro gressive Conservatives called for adjournment of the Com mons for the rest of the day in parliamentary ploy to protest Trudeaus absence and the eco nomic situation The Liberals defeated the motion by 87 votes to 71 but it took 70 minutes to round up enough government members to do it There were 100 MP5 ab sent for the vote Trudeau was in Winnipeg for televised speech on national unity Conservative Leader Joe Clark said the prime minister has not made speech in the Commons on national unity Sln ce the Nov 15 election of the Parti Quebecois in Quebec It was another example Clark said of Trudeau playing down Parliament by making major speeches outside the Commons instead of before the MP5 The Conservatives also were critical of the budget especially in light of govern ment statistics released last week which showed unem ployment stood at 81 per cent or 944000the highest since the depression of the 19305 INDEX ALSO UP It was announced last week that the consumer price index rose in March with the biggest monthly increase since wage and price controls began in 1975 The annual rate now is 74 per cent well ahead of the gov ernments target of six per cent for 1977 At the start of the daily ques tion period Clark said the gov ernment did not care about the unemployed and should seek economic policy advice from the jobless and organized labor He also urged that the Com mons finance committee be allowed to seek public views on the economy Acting Prime Minister Allan MacEachen said the govern ment has $660 million in pro grams to fight unemployment and provided $12 billion in in centives in the budget to busi ness to create jobs But MacEachen turned down Clarks committee suggestion saying the committee already had too much work Later MacEachen irked for mer prime minister John Die fenbaker by saying the Com mons agenda did not have time available for several days of debate on national unity Outside the Commons Die fenbaker said formal debate is needed because it is the only way to get the prime minister to agree to speak on the subject in the Commons instead of else where SUPPORT MOTION The government was sup ported on the adjournment vote by New Democrat Max Salts man WaterlooCambridge and Social Credit MP Eudore Allard Rimouski Standing in the 26+seat Commons Liberal 135 Conservative 96 NDP 16 Social Credit 10 Independent vacancies The adjournment call is tra ditional way to harass the gov ernment During the budget debate So cial Credit Leader Andre Fortin said the government had no strategy to maintain the em ployment the country already had and to increase the number of jobs Government whip Gus Mac Farlane said the announcement that the controls program would not be immediately disolved is good news for the average Canadian He also said the opposition seems to forget that many of the countrys economic woes are being felt in other industrialized countries PAPER TOWELS Roll Pack stock becomes
