he Weekly meditation Loyolties determine decisions By REV RAY WALDOCK First Baptist Church The recent news reports of the possible defection of Jack Horner from the Progressive Conservative party to the Liberals has caused great deal of public interest It has caused Joe Clark PC national leader to take second look at his leadership role in the party It has also caused the peo ple of Canada to look at their representatives more closely Jack Horner has long been known as the maverick from the West that is one who doesnt necessarily toe the party line He has long been admired by people who are unhappy with party politics On matters of conscience or pclicy Horner has been known to take stand contrary to the party line This makes artyliners uneasy yet it tends to give en couragement tot rest of the people The tension between Homer and Clark highlights cne of the basic problems of democracy The democratic process allows us to elect from our community good honest and trustworthy men and women who will reflect the standards and concerns of the community We elect them as our representatives What happens in fact is that these people run on party ticket They are sponsored by party often partially funded by party and are expected to reflect the partys political philosophy is precisely here that the problem arises ur elected representatives have dual loyalties and these loyalties are often in conflict Our good honest and trustworthy men and women have been so used to being loyal to the party line that when they are willing to stand up for the needs of their constituency in contrast to the party line they are known as mavericks and often are disciplined or made to feel so unwanted that they look to another party as means of fulfillingtheir commitment It is sad plight for the the people of Canada when their representatives no longer represent them It is sad when government is no longer of the people by the people and for the people but has become government of the party by the party and for the party We have moral obligation to our soc1ety to elect can didates who will demonstrate that their first loyaty is to the peop who elect them There is an interesting parallel here to the Christian faith We proclaim our loyalty to Jesus Christ when we confess Him as Lord and Saviotr In the politics of everyday life however we find that oar own selfish loyalties determine our decision The party line of putting ourselves first our pleasures and our prejudices our likes and our dislikes in poin of fact results in our putting Christ second The results are clear to see in our society It is very difficult if not impossible to differentiate between those for whom Jesus is Lcrd and those who do what they want As Canadians we have policical problem as Christians
