Math professor knocks system OTTAWA CP Univer sity of Ottawa mathematics professor has started an aca demic controversy here by say ing the system encourages professors to pass unqualified students high pass rate is the key to job security for professor said Prof Jansen adding he had finally sold out to the system It happens in the end he said in an interview You feel so helpless you just shrug your shoulders and say What the heck He predicted his comments would draw fireIf rock the boat too much wont be around this university very longand reaction was fast and largely furious Peter Morland dean of sci ence atid engineering called Jansens remarks irrespon sible out of place and naive Jansen said that when he be gan teaching here 14 years ago he failed 40 to 45 per cent of his firstltyear students in calculus He said he was proud of his standards STUDENTS RIZIALIAIEI But his teaching evaluation sheetsAforms which students complete evaluating the effec tiveness of an in StIUCtOIAWOUld be returned with comments such as an average professor Occasionally the department chairman would ask why his classes had such Iiiin failure rate They didnt know the work how could pass them he would answer couple of years ago he said he failed only 20 per cent to see what would happen At the end of his course he was rated above average by most of his students Last year he failed only five students and his evaluation was excellent What proved is that pro fessor from whom the student learns the least is the one who is rated the highest Dont demand too much and the students will love you Some of Jansens colleagues appeared worried and angry but others agreed Morland said Jansen is vel come to express his opinion but what hes talking about is sit uation that can be found every where not just at this univer sity CHAIRMAN ONCERNED Walter Burgess chairman of mathematics was concerned about the damage to the reputa tion of the university and to his own department Jansen is entitled to his opinion btit it seems to me his view is rather idiosyncratic he said Any general trend he may have noticed in teaching first year mathematics is certainly not peculiar to this university However Patrick Ilill of ar letoii Universitys geology de partment said teachers have been sellingout for years Hill said that last year he wanted to fail six of his 48 first ycar geology students but the chairman of the department told him it would be difficult to attract students to the univer sity if oneeighth of the class failed So he changtxl all the ifs to Us He said he was glad Jansen spoke otit Many of us feel that way at Carleton In fact many of us could tell stories much worse than his Alternative school for Indians PORT ALBERNI BC tCP An alternativoschool with an emphasis on practicality has been set up for Indian students here after several years in the planning If it proves itself it might eventually cover the full cur riculum at all levels up to Grade 10 George Watt manager for the local Sheshaht band and central figure in creation of the school in September 1976 said the school has started at both ends and is working toward the middle There is preschool and kin dergarten group and class made up principally of 15and ltryearolds The main objec tives are to cure the dropout problem and ensure courses are relevant to the students lives Indian children dont get far in the regular school system said Watt Lets face it we have dropout rate of about 90 per cent by Grade 11 for we think two reasons One we refer to as the fail ure syndrome the fact that many of them just cant master many of the courses and as result get very down on the sys tem SEE NO RELEVANCE The other is the fact that many of them can see no rele vance in the course material to the way they live and what they plan to do Watt said many students were attracted to the school located on reserve property just outside this Vancouver Island community because it offers an alternative to the education system they once werein Were being called dropout school but that isnt the case he said The mathematics course of fered by the school is in prac tical mathhow to compute in terest rates the principles or consumer banking the management of small business course in communications includes practical English in struction along with studies having an emphasis on Indian literature and reading and writ ing Indian language Television and newspapers are used exten sively in the English side of the program science course in the schools second semester MARSHA McCULLOUGH Sears Hair Bazaar is
