tau tu WVQ March 20 1077 Sports Corner Joining loops was first step Half of the new Barrie City Fastball League looks to be nicely settled into neat eightteam package while the other half is waiting before taking final team count The Recreation Division has six teams committed to the 1977 season with three more on the fringe Ralph Lambert preSident of the Recreation Division is looking for an eight team grouping this season Hes hopeful of having something definite by the April 7th meeting at Georgian College The Barrie City Fastball League is the combination of the Barrie and District Major and the Barrie Recreation fast ball league The Major League is now the Intermediate Division with the Recreational League changing to the Recreation Division of the Barrie City Fastball League Each division will keep its own executive maintain its own policies and rules The two divisions will intermingle 51 for tournaments banquets and fundraising ventures The reason for the merger was to create two balanced leagues although it appears the Recreation Division has undergonethe greatest change Four teams left the Recreation DiviSion to hookup with the Intermediate loop This leaves the Recreation Division with number of new teams to break into the lineup for the upcoming season One such newcomer is Canplas which was accepted into the fold last week Riverwood Heights which competed in the Vespra Senior League last season is another possibility along with club under the Brass and Glen banner These clubs have yet to make formal presentation as yet to the new executive Nottawa Electric participated in the Major League last season but has shown desire not to return this year There are rumors that Nottawa is considering entering the Vespra League We told them we would appreciate their coming into our league Lambert said The meeting at Georgian College is to be the deadline for clubs wishing to make presentation to enter the Recreation DIVISIOII Lambert indicated that the executive would probably fj begin work on schedule One disappointment of the merger was the decision of Alliston Sports to remain in the Recreation Division Officials of both divisions expressed surprise when Alliston Sports one of the stronger clubs last year lid not move up to the Intermediate level The idea of the merger was to create two balanced leagues which would lead to increased competitiveness and better brand of ball The decision to stay or move to particular division was left up to each club Bentorswell Construction Barrie Floor and Wall Convertible Pools and thejuvenile club decided to try the Intermediate Division Oddman out is Canadian Forces Base Borden The Braves werent included in the plans of either division One team representative at last weeks meeting expressed the opinion that the Major League had merer been strengthened at the expense of the Recreation League There were indications that these four teams were going to move up anyway noted Gary alvert president of the IntermediateDivision Were not talking dollars and cents were talking where these guys want to play ball Taking the first step towards merging the league was the hardest Now its up to the two executives to work in bar mony to forget past misgivings and to come up with pair of smoothrunning operations under the one umbrella Over the next few weeks the in League will be meeting to work out schedule of games for the ball parks in the city Establishing rate of pay for umps is another item to work on The City League is looking at Bizteam tournament in July as well as combined banquet in late September Calvert is back for another term as preSidcnt of the Iii termediatc Division In fact the entire executivc of last year is back Firstvicepresidcnt is Lorne Knowles Norm Raycralt is the other vicepresident with Ron Hoggarth the sccrctary treasurer Mike Clark is director of public relations Lambert was elected to serve as the president of the Recreation Division
