years of having hooks for hands Susanna Harte is learning to adjust to new myoelectric hands that look and work almost like real ones Five years ago the 46yearold mother of two was operating punch press when her arms were caught in the machine and were severed six inches below the elbow Mrs Harte received her new hands six months ago and has been undergoing retrain ing since then Mentally feel more human now Mrs Harte said in an interview Wednesday Mrs Harte said it took three years to learn to use the hooks but now she is able to hold fork and eat and can get change from her purse something she could not do with the hooks However she said she has noticed change in peoples behavior towards her When used to have hooks people used to open the doors for me she said Now they dont even bother guess Ill just have to ct used to it and learn to open ioors for myself Mrs Harte said she has no intention of returning to work work harder now at home than did at work and with my new arms do my housework better than most people with their own arms She said her only complaint with the new limbs which work through combination of muscle and electricity is that they run out of juice after particularly activcday At night plug them in to charge them up for the next day Mrs Harte said Dr Tony Kennard who has been at the rehabilitation centre for 17 years described Mrs llarte as
