Adult Rehabilitation Centre has waiting list of 22 clients The Adult Rehabilitation Centre at 175 Bayfield St known as ARC Industries now has staff of 12 and 63 clients and waiting list of 22 Ron Houghton director of the centre said that last year eight clients were placed in the com munity as independent self sufficient adults It is the aim of the Ministry of Community and Social ser v1ces and the Barrie and District Association for the Mentally Retarded to get the work and training side of the program as close to self sufficiency as possible Mr Houghton said The centre operates on the philosophy that the mentally handicapped have the same rights as others the right to live and work in their own com munity We are getting different type of response from industry now in that they are more willing to accept the han dicapped in more complicated types of work We are hoping to expand our production area by opening space in an industrial area of the city In the last two years the cen tre has taken on more different types of work Last year the people of the centre produced 900000 pieces of mimeograph and photocopy work They also do packaging for puch companies as Radio Shack General Electric the ministry of natural resources Kolmar and Can las Four thousand Snow Ba ies for the Barrie Winter Carnival and 10000 real estate signs and numerous surveyors stakes were also produced Packaging and assembling child carriers for bicycles bike stands and working in the cen tres kitchen preparing the days hot meal keep many of the people busy throughout the sevenhouraday week At present the centre has waiting list but with the govern ments restraint on spending it is not known facilities will be available While the centre is primarily for the mentally retarded it also provides services for other handicapped persons which are designed to assist them in becoming selfsufficient adults liiving within the community Continuing education is available throu the Simcoe
