Vendors welcome MI9232425 Crash diet not for tot OTTAWA iCP Mounting evidence that fat babies and fat children grow to fat adults is no reason to put overweight babies in crash diets experts warn Taking fat baby off breast feeding or formula and feeding it skimmed milk as early as three or four months of age will cause serious nutrition defl ciencies and could retard growth said Marylou Baxter outpatients dietitian at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto Mrs Baxter said they tackle infant obesity first by looking at what the baby is eating and the amount Sometimes we find mother isnt diluting con centrated formula that she is simply feeding the baby too much or that solid food has been introduced into the diet too soon Mrs Baxter said once the problem is found and corrected the babys rate of weight gain slows and the infant grows in to its proper weight WARNS PARENTS Dr Kindl an Ottawa pediatrician who has been run ning program for overweight children said parents should be careful not to start their baby on bad eating habits by feed ing them every hour to shut them up Both women agree that par ents should not urge their chil dren lo eat more than they seem ready lo cal Dr Kindl said from her ex perience with the program for fat children she has learned that both the parents and the child must change their life styles to overcome the problem of childhood obesity Its not just mallcrofdict ing alone she said The families must exercise morctaking up hiking walking and bicycling for example Dr Kindl said parents should also stop family snacking on nutritionally unimportant food junk food which add unnccdcd calories to adequate diets If the parents sit in front of the TV and snack all night then thc kids will do the same she said Lets face it sixyear old isnt concerned about what she will look like in bikini Antihunt treatment for Peel LONDON Reutcr The de secration of remote grave has marked yet another round in the bizarre British feud bet ween people Israels arms industry has grown from clandestine bullet factory un der farm laundry 30 years ago into billiondollar venture producing everything from combat boots to jet fighters While most of the production goes for its own defence needs Israel last year reported ex ports of $300 million worth of military equipment By entering the international arms trade Israel has collided with the United States The US remains Israels main weapons supplier and when Israel sells weapons abroad it not only competes with the US but also sells weapons involving American parts and technology When Israel sold jets to Hon duras for example it went against American policy of withholding sophisticated equipment from Latin America There is also concern in Washington about reports that Israel sells advanced weapons to Chile and South Africa two countries that cant buy arms in the US Washington vetoed the sale of 24 Israelimade Kfir jets to Ecuador because the plane uses an American engine and American approval is required The Washington action ended Simmillion deal for Israel The US was also unhappy when Israel sold six French su perMystere fighterbombers to Honduras because the plane was refitted with American en gines Most details of the Israeli ar ms industry are secret pro tected by military censorship Some foreign estimates say 30000 to 40000 persons are em ployed directly in military pro duction some of them foreign experts Israel rarely announces arms deals and often forbids even confirmation of reports from outside Israel But the official figure on ar ms exports was some $300 million last year and about $200 million in 1975 Some for eign experts put the total at nearer $500 million and Moshe Arendls former Israeli de fence industry official said it is to the tune of about half bit lion dollars Spectacular fire era is over TORONTO CP Modem building techniques sprinklers and smoke detectors have brought the day of the spec tacularfiretoanend Bernard Bonser novel not horror story Reviewed for CP By DINA SUDLOW An eerie old house ruins of mysterious colony unsolved murders and dark legends sound like the basic ingredients for Gothic horror story They can all be found in Jack Hodgins novel The Invention of the World but this book is not Gothic and definitely not horrible In fact it is difficult to fit the novel into any particular genre as Invention is mixture of realism impressionism and good old Irish blarney In the early 19005 the strange Donal Keneally founded col ony centred on his House of Revelations where he cowed and mystified motley collec tion of followers with feats of magic and wild rhetoric He had brought the unfortunates from an Irish village to the coastal forests of Vancouver Island where they hacked liv ing of sorts from the bush and paid fearful homage to Ke neally their Father But in the 19205 the colony and Keneally died amid scan dal and murder the House of Revelations was abandoned and the colonists huts were slowly reclaimed by the bush And so it remained for 50 years until Maggie Kyle ap peared on the scene Maggie tired of rough camp life and series of logger lovers decided to turn respect able She took the insurance money left by man shed briefly married and bought the House of Revelations turning the surrounding property into trailer park for rich American tourists COLONY ALIVE And to the beautiful Maggie and the House gravitates col orful collection of offbeat hangerson friends and lovers Once again the colony is alive Maggie and her friends take the reader on delightfully wild journey through the book each one searching for somethinga past future themselvesand for the solution to the mystery of black Keneally and his colony The quest goes from present to past and back again from the greengrey forests of Van couver Island to the rocky hillside of an Irish county and back The answers are found ap propriately enough at the House of Revelations Hodgins talent for vivid de scription was revealed in his first book collection of short stories called Spit Delaneys Island which pictured logging camps fishing communities and their inhabitants Once again he takes Ian and loving look at the upislan people and their zest for liv ingand loving The wedding reception is one of the funniest pieces in the book Hodgins Invention is im mensely satisfying fast aced with good measures sus pense imagery and humor And oh boy that reception The Invention of the World Jack Hodglns 81095 154 pages Macmillan JAMMED LOSER GLASGOW Scotland ZCP It just wasnt Thomas Huttons day when he lost on the horses Following his loss he went into drycleaning shop to steal the cash box But the lid jammed on his fingers and he had to run out with the box still on his hand
