take Ottawa taxes the manufacturer $60 for corporate tax on that type of automobile and they pick up hundreds of dollars in personal income taxes from those who work on the manufacture of the car BIGGESTWINNER Granted the $100 dealer markup on small car is unusual but there is no doubt the federal government is the biggest net winner when you buy car stated the riding member Pricing on the Chevrolet Caprice which has been ad judged by Motor Trend Magazine as the car of the year paints the same picture Mr Sinclair found Discussing this aspect fur ther he said One invoce shown me for Caprice reveal ed the car was shipped to the dealer for net price of $547582 General Motors pro fit would be about $160 on that amount Federal sales tax of $66691 was added raising the price to $614273 The local dealer had agreed to sell the car for $6600 giving him $450 markup to cover his overhead He would likely net about $100 after all costs Then the provin cial sales tax is addcd at $462 giving final price of $7062 of which $112891 was for federal and provincial sales tax We found the same story with Ford Chrysler of Am crican Motors lines he reportcd ln outlining his own views Mr Sinclair termed the sales tax regressive They hit the low income person harder than the high wage earner he said Citing an example he stated pcrson with taxablc income of $0000 labout $10000 in gross earnings before deductions for married man with children pays 15J of his taxable earn ings in federal incomc tax If he bought the Caprice the federal tax would equal 11 of his taxable income that year or if he bought the Chcvctte it would be 550 he said the other hand person with taxable incomc of 320000 pays 21 of his taxablc carnings in federal income taxes yet if he Tlichttc it Obviously purchased the Caprice the fcdcral sales tax would rcpre scnt only of his taxablc in come and if he purchased the would be 113 sales taxes fall disproportionatcly on thosc that can least afford thcm hcsaid MURII MILEAGE thc provincial lhc Opposition mcmbcr sug gcstcd it would appcar that thc fcdcral salcs tax and perhaps sales tax on smullcr cars should bc rcmov ed Not only would this hclp those on low wages but most importantly it would encourage thc purchasc of smaller more cncrgy efficient vehicles he suggested The small hcvcttc gcls almost 40 milcs per gallon in SINCLAIR STEVENS talks to dealers ideal conditions in city and highway driving as does the Ford Pinto Pony or the AMC Gremlin Bigger cars such as the Caprice get 23 miles per gallon while luxury car like the Cadillac gets less than 15 miles per gallon These are Transport Canada ratings which are confirmed by the en vironmental protection agency in the United States The federal government in their budget last May imposed weight tax on heavy automobiles along with $100 air conditioner tax At the time they stated that they hoped the tax would deter the purchase of bigger cars which would save energy Questioned in the House of Commons Finance Minister Macdonald indicated that the tax would also produce about $17 million in extra revenue said Mr Sinclair commenting He refused however to drop the federal sales tax on smaller cars which would give an incen tive to those who wished to pur chase new car to buy the most energy efficient vehicle The YorkSimcoe MP argued if Ottawa wanted to encourage the use of energy efficient smaller cars it is time that they dropped the sales tax on those vehicles Such tax is adding about 20 to the cost of car when you add the tax the dealers markup the provin cial sales tax and the extra financing charges he said Mr Sinclair concluded lttawa is often quick to deter indixiduals through the imposi tion of new tax but they are slow to encourage positive ac tion through the removal of taxes Not only do they make it dif ficult for person of meagre means to purchase the cheap auto but government is also waiting for the driver as soon as he hits the pavement Federal and provincial taxes and royalties now absorb 60 of the total price you pay for your gasoline Food redistribution Bond Head UCW topic BUNI HEAD Food was the topic when thc Bond
