possible links to cancer Lalonde told news confer ence that action was taken against the food additive be cause it is not essential and can be replaced He said although smoking is not essential the risks it entails have been ac cepted by society Minutes after the Canadian saccharin ban was announced the United States said it would follow suit citing the three year $300000 study done by Canadas federal health depart ment which found high rates of bladder cancer among the male offspring of rats exposed to high levels of saccharin Lalonde said the needs of Canadas 175000 diabetics havent been forgotten and some dietetic foods may be ex empt from the ban He said pure saccharin used mainly to sweeten coffee and tea will still be available but sold only in drugstores after Sept EXCEEDS
