The Barrie Examiner Thursday March 10 1977 1151 Sports Corner Owner says no By RANDY McDONALD Examiner Sports Editor Barrie Flyers leaving Barrie No way in the world says Gord Coates owner prest dent of the defending Ontaio Hockey Association Senior 35 League champions playoff games bridge Saturday in the first period which put him out of corn the current team leader in the playoffs with 12 points Coates uashed newlyrevived rumor of the Flyers pull ing up sta es and moving to Collingwood An article ap peared in an Oshawa paper some time ago which stated that rumors were again circulating that Barrie could lose its senior hockey club Ive been made three offers to move but its pretty hard because everybody who is involved in the team is Barrie based Coates said The Flyers organization was instrumental in gettingthe upstairs portion of the Barrie Arena turned into combina tion meetingbooster club area Coates said he has too many business obligations to be travelling to another town to be involved in hockey plus wejustsncnt $10000 on that arena Sooner or later the people of Barrie are going to wake up and realize just what kind of hockey team they have here said Coates Coach Darryl Sly said those rumors of the Flyers leavmg have been floating around for four years now He mentioned that there was an element in Collingwood trying to get Senior hockey back and with Barrie showing sporadic iii terest in supporting senior hockey over the years it was natural for rumors to begin Flyers open bestofseven semifinal playoff series against the Orillia Terriers tonight at the Barrie Arena Terriers are said to be hurting but Sly is skeptical He feels it could be ploy on the part of the Terriers to lull Flyers into state of overconfidence He said the Flyers are going out ready to play healthy team Sometimes players play better hurt he offered No way does Sly expect an easy series with Orillia Were looking to win the first period of the first game Terry Skelcher manager of the Orillia senior hockey club thinks Wayne Carleton could be the difference in the series really think the key to the whole series could be Wayne Carleton said Skelcher earlier this week The guy is just tremene dous hockey player and honestly think that if we can stop Carleton weve got good chance at beating Bar rie Skeleher admitted it wouldnt be easy Well need 100 from all out hockey players iSly sug gested that Orillia be on the look out for Jon Hammond Les Burgess Paul Regan Phil Branston Bob Baird Gary Lyte Robbie Ralph Garry MacMillian Look to Bob Baird to crack the SOOpOint career mark tonight Recent statistics released by team statistician Debbie Brown reveals the sixyear veteran has 498 career points on goals and 238 assists This could be the series that Phil Branston reaches the loo goal pleateau Branston in his third season with Barrie has four playoff goals to his credit while lineniate Paul Regan is WAYNE CARLETON Baird is the leading goal scorer with five goals in as many Both Coates and Sly said they expect the series could last as long six games Flyers are not totally free of injuries themselves Defenceman Steve Sly stopped shot with his knee in ame mission for the remainder of the game He skated at Mondays practice but may just see limited action tonight Bob Monteith has not played in any of the Plyers playoff games since injuring himself in the second last game of the schedule and hes doubtful starter Sly is not taking anything for granted He espects rillia to give Barrie their best shot just as sure as he expects Bill rie to win Ken Knapton who joined
