Ni ht Watch tho oxomlnor Tuudav July 31 279 Gryphon production fine By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner Things are looking up for the Gryphon Theatre After disappointing version of Same Time Next Year director Ver non Chapman has come up with fine production of Night Watch clever mystery thriller by Lucille Fletcher Most of the credit for the suc cess of the play which opened Monday night at Georgian Col lege Theatre is due to superb performance by Tudi Wiggins as Elaine Wheeler sophisticated highstrung New Yorker who spends difficult three days trying to convince her household that the corpses she sees in nearby tenement arent the product of an overac tiveimagination Mrs Wheeler is the focal point of the play and Miss Wig gins captured every nuance ot difficult role The character she plays totters precariously on the brink of hysteria through out the play the result of nervous breakdown suffered eight years before but Miss Wiggins resists the temptation to overplay the melodramatic dimensions of the role For once the casting of lead role in Gryphon produc tion cant be faulted Miss Wig gins not only portrays woman distraught by tragedy no one believes in she is that woman With every flutter of her arms and every rising crescendo of despair she builds charac terization thats not only credi ble but completely sym pathetic lf Elaine Wheeler isnt believable throughout the first three scenes of the play the entire storyline of the play falls apart ENDING EFFECTIVE And its the plausibility of Miss Wigginss torture that makes the ending of the play so effective The playwright sets up the audienCe so cleverly that 7265333 smeNGPOOLS Phone when we finally learn the truth about the two mysterious murders We dont mind the trick ending because the sur prise is so complete The supporting roles in the play were less convincing if on ly because Miss Wiggins cast such powerful spell in the lead role that the other performers seemed weak by comparison Dan MacDonald as Elaines husband tried to match the in tensity of his wife but his dramatic outbursts seemed at odds with an otherwise lacklustre performance Mac Donald faced the difficult task of making an essentially in sincere husband appear tender 7261322 GRAND OPENING and loving and he too often substituted frenetic busyness for dramatic depth Claude Bede made the most of his role as Curtis Appleby the nextdoor neighbor who takes sympathetic interest in Mrs Wheelers nocturnal sightings Bede played Appleby with fine comic flair creating the few humorous moments of the play and turning minor sup porting role into one of the most enetertaining in the pla The part begs for an actor can make Appleby funny without being ridiculous and every note struck by Bede rang true Less true to character were Barbara Saxberg Land as Mrs Wheelers friend Blanche and Fran Handman as the housekeeper Miss Saxberg Land was rarely believable and Miss Handmans atrocious at tempt at German
