David Bowie of delivering more of the same old thing on record In fact throughout near 13year recording career the only Bowie constant from album to album has been the absurdities of his introspections Sometimes it works but the British singer has had his share of duds The chief reason why David Bowie is often regarded more as character than top recording artist is that he has yet to latch onto one readily identifiable style It would seem as if musically he changes his mind almost as often as he changes his socks Bowie who first attracted at tention in 1969 with the bizarre hit single Space ddity more or less recognizes this fact on his new release Lodger The al bums 10 tracks are widely var ied often underscored with an exotic flair Past efforts beginning with Ziggy his pen chant for mime and acting has given his performance theat rical quality but one which never translated onto disc as well as say Peter Gabriel with early Genesis And although Bowie main tains Flight with its innovative jungleesque arrangement backing milea Ininute delivery and Move On whose galloping rhythm and ex aggerated vocal make the song sound like western lampoon despite the lyric about an inter national wanderer Also good is the side two kick off entitled DJ On that song Bowie employs similar theme not quite as successfully as Harry Chapin did some years back on WOLD But Bowies tune is based on cleve pun As disc spinner am what play Cant turn around no cant turn around he cant change his life Lodger is not an album for rock purists It should find fa vor however among
