GA tho pxamlnor Friday July 27 1m MAX HAINES Crime flashback Years ago when young unwed lailics found themselves pregnant their prcdicarncnt was source of more than lit tlc embarrassment in some Instances their delicate slate liqcame the catalyst which led to tragedy in this side of the Atlantic the hester iillctlc case is considered the classic example hcstcrs girlfriend Inform IIl hitn slic leascnhall asc lcts get right down to it The pregnant lady was Hose llarscnt and the ac cused Impregnator was William iardincr lt all bcgan in filth in the tiny village of leascnhall which lies just north ot Ipswich in Suffolk England liill Gardiner was Icijctablc inarricil man having sircil four happy healthy littlc iairlincis The family lived in pleasant cote tagc on Main St liill worked down inain activriy outside his regular cinployinciil was his involvement with the church He belonged to the Primitive Methodist longrcgarr lion and attended church regularly in the neighlxiiiring Village of Sibion Actually hcilid more than just attend liill was acting steward treasurer Sunday school superinten iiani and wouldnt you know it choirinastci Well respected liccause of these ecclesiastical pursuits Bill was con sidered to be pillar of the community It Is sad to relate but dcvastmgly accurate that many wives of men accused of Iinpregnating sundry ladies are not themselves raving beauties Mrs Gardiner was not looker She was rather small woman who for some reason seems to have developed slight squint III both eyes This distracting habit was coupl ed with an adolescent complexion which never did clear up Mrs Gardiner was decidedly plain Rose Harsent was quite another story She was domestic servant at rambling old gabled house known as Pro vidence House in lcascnhall which as the home of Deacon and Mrs trisp lt can be said that Rosedidnt run around nor was she on intimate terms with half the village Now that my cons cicnce is clear evidence exists which indicated that the boredom of village life sometimes go the better of all the red blood corpuscles which flowed so recklessly through Roses pretty body For selected discreet lovers Rose sometimes did it Having travelled through the village of Suffolk have witnessed first hand the young ladies of the area There is pink blush to their checks which exudes good health No doubt their intake of dairy products produceslong legged robust wellendowed females who know there just has to be something better on the other side of the woodpile Rose was one of those Rose sang in the choir and it was here that she became acquainted with Bill Gardiner Each evening after practice the choirmaster gave Rose lift home to Peasenhall from Sibton Village life being what it was in those days it was only natural that rumours began to spread about Rose and Bill There were those who said that each evening the choir master taught Rose more than singing The vague rumours came to head when two boys named Skinner and Wright openly said that they followed Bill and Rose into vacant thatched building referred to by the locals as the Doctors thapel The religious mores of the church couldnt ignore such an accusation An inquiry was held under the direction of Mr John Guy big wheel down at the church The two boys stated that they had sneaked up within listening distance of Bill and Rose and had heard them giggling and get this they heard Rose say Oh oh Both Bill and Rose denied any such meeting claiming the whole story was made up by the two lads for excitement The church investigation cleared the accused couple of any wrongdoing We will never know for sure what went on between Bill and Rose before the church inquiry We will also never know if anything transpired between the two after the inquiry Heres something we do know In May of 1902 Rose was six months pregnant On May 31 there was violent thunder storm over liasenhall The heavens opened and heavy rains fell for hours lt was indeed night waiting for murder to happen 10 pm Mrs Crisp said goodnight to Rese and retired for the night Later Mrs Crisp sleeping fitfully due to the thunder thought she heard dull thud emanting from Roses quarters Her husband convinced her it was just the storm and she ignored the strange noise The storm abated at four in the morning and the villagers slept peacefully thereafter Next morning Roses brother William Harsent went to Providence House to deliver some clean linen to his sister He had the distressing experience of finding his sisters body In pool of blood at the foot of stairway Rose had been stabbed in the breast and her throat had been twice slashed from ear to ear The body was dmed only in nightgown and stockings The lower portion of Roses nightdress was burned as were her legs Beside the dead girl was broken lamp The body lay on copy of The East Anglian Daily Times No weapon was found at the scene but broken bottle which had contained paraffin was lying close to the girls head The label on the broken bottle contained the words two to three teaspoons sixth part to be taken every four hours Mrs Gardiners children lnvestigating officers gathered wealth of clues all poin ting to one man The broken bottle which had obvrousty IV IIIII been in the Gardiner htlllt at one time as oi course strong eVIdencc but there was more Roses brother not onlv delivered fresh linen he swore he had delivered Iiie newspaper found under his sisters body to William Gar diner few days before the murder Then there was nosy gameskeeper named James Morris who was up and about at the moment Roses body was discovered He was aware of the scandal involving Bill Gardiner and Rose This young sleuth noticed footprints leading from Gardiners house to Providence House He described the pattern made by the rubber soled shoes letter was found in Roses room Dear will try to see you tonight at 12 oclock at your Place it you Put light in your window at 10 oclock for about ten minutes Then you can take it out again Dont have light in your room at 12 as Will come around the back An unusual habit It was established that Bill Gardiner had the unusual habit of capitalizing the first letter of words in the middle of sentences On June three days after the murder Bill protesting his innocence was arrested and charged with Rose Harsents murder During Bills trial the defense explained away most of the prosecutions case Rose could have come into possession of Bills newspaper in dozens of ways in the small village Ms Gardiner swore that her husband was at home the entire night of the murder Defense experts stated that the letter found in Roses room could well have been written by so meone other than Bill Mrs Gardiner explained how the in criminating medicine bottle found at the scene had come in to Roses possession few months prior to the murder Mrs Gardiner had prescription filled for her children The children had consumed the medicine and the empty bottle had remained in the family medicine chest Later Rose had come to her complaining of sore throat Mrs Gardiner had taken some camphorated oil and placed It into the bottle with the incriminating label and given it to Rose In this way the bottle innocently came into Roses possession Morris evidence came under scathing cross examination Was it natural for man to memorize footprint so that he could match it to rubber soled shoe from memory The defense thought not Finally like so many other cases which have been argued before and since there was not drop of blood found on Bill Gardiners clothes Every stitch he owned was examined but no blood stains were ever found The jury retired to deliberate but retuer and advised the court they were hopelessly deadlocked second trial ws held in Jan 1903 After deliberating for two hours and twelve minutes the foreman of the jury reported that they were hopelessly deadlocked Bill was released from custody No other person has ever been tried for Roses murder While thunder roared and ligh ing flashed on the last day of May 1902 the father of unborn child silenced her forever tuesday tv EVENING in cool non poi LIVELY COU am aEsT KEPT SECRETS NEWS HOLLYWOOD SQUARES DEFINITION 930
