advice Vespra residents By RICHARD THOMAS The Examiner group of residents of Snow Valley Road in Vespra Township have petitioned the townships council to im mediately close an industrial waste transfer station located southwest of their homes The petition of about 80 names was presented to coun cil Monday and demanded the closure due to the fact that previous leakage of industrial waste has gone off the site thereby endangering out water supply and the health of our families The resident were notified last week by ministry of en vironment and Simcoe County health unit officials that spill of industrial waste on the site owned by Chemical Petro Wayte tCPWl Disposal Ltd could contaminate wells by working its way through the water table The spill of about 35000 gallons of waste occurred in June 1978 when the plastic liner ruptued in lagoon used for storage IIPIII 2J0 SILHJIF SEIISIIII Victoria Wood is back in Barrie with all new all brick 1979 single family Classics With spokesman for the homeowner at special meeting with council Thursday DEMANDEI ANSWERS In her letter Mrs Kellogg has demanded answers as to why the township authorized such use of the land in question when it has been zoned agriculturalresidentiall and not industrial why residents within certain distance were not notified when the operation began in 1977 and why the company was given permission to use the land when ministry of environment department of health officials and certain council members all stated at the Thursday meeting that it was not the most suitable loca tion due to soil conditions and its position at the end of residential area In her letter Mrs Kellogg has also asked council what action it intends to take to remove the operation because they did not comply with the township in their operational procedures or what legal action will be taken against the company to protect township property and residents interest in the ways of dollars and cents Council agreed that Mrs Kelloggs questions be ex plored and acted upon where possible Council is quite alarmed about it Reeve George Buie told Mrs Kellogg who attend ed Mondays meeting It is serious problem Mrs Kellogg has asked coun cil to answer her questions in writing She later told The Ex aminer she had been told iii telephone conversation by Reeve Buie that PW had been allowed to locate on the land because the township was lose ing land and assessment to the city of Barrie through annexa tion and wanted to encourage industry locally dont think all the rules were followed and thats why am being so demanding industrial spill eil members declined to answer questions as to whether CPW has overstepped its agreement with the township until the townships solicitor had been consulted It is hard to remember ac curately what was said four years ago Venner Lambert deputy reeve said Council members however said Mrs Kellogg did not have all the facts Reeve Buie said comments made by ministry and health unit officials about the un suitability of the site were made in hindsight There had been no questions of the suitability of the site in council members minds at the time of the application he said At Thursdays meeting the reeve had told delegation of the residents that council had been under the impression the station was to be used only for petroleum waste products At this time however there is nothing to suggest that PW overstepped the actual agree ment with the township and in chided unspecified chemicals GnAlyiboPENnth from indtistries outside the county as has been suggested by the residents petition he said REVIEWED APPLICATION The original application by PW which was reviewed by council during the meeting in dicated the site would be used for storage facility and was approved by the ministry of housing The ministry of environment also approved the application for the system of storage Council has agreed to send letter to the ministry of en vironment stating that in the event of contamination the township will hold CPW and the ministry responsible Another letter to be sent to PW is asking for guarantee of alternate water supplies if the waste should migrate north east through the water table and contaminate the private wells lagoon INDUSTRIAL HOME CARPETING NEW ADDRESS CORNER OF ST VINCENT BELL fARM RD 7372860 Jack Duffy NEW REMNANT ROOM Joo Harrodino Large
