Canada interest rate Sunday but does not think the move will seriously worsen inflation Certainty am reluctant as finance minister because our interest rates are already very high Crosbie said in an inter view from his Newfoundland home But under the circumstances felt had no choice Shortly after the central bank announced it had raised its lending rate to chartered banks to record 11 per cent Crosbie was on the telephone to explain the move He said he considered the increase the lesser of two evils Although it will increase the cost of borrowing he said the alter native which would end up costing the con sumer far more would be to sit back and allow US interest rates to creep up to the same level as Canadas This would mean foreign investors would have little incentive to invest in Cenada and the dollar would begin to slide on world markets If the Canadian dollar drops appreciably then well really have inflation Crosbie said HIS FIRST Sundays bank rate increase was the first Crosbie has supervised The last bank rate increase was in January when former Liberal finance minister Jean Chretien raised it to 11 per cent the highest it had ever been and the Progressive Conser vatives were vocal in their opposition Crosbie then the Progressive Conservative The attack is reported to have occurred on June 2021 but did not become public knowledge until The Associated Press ob tained copy of report by the survivors Diplomatic sources confirmed there was an attack but the Vietnamese embassy said it had no knowledge of it Spratly Island only 500 metres long by 300 metres wide is part of tiny island group claimed by Vietnam China and the Philips pines It is about 650 kms east of Vietnam and almost the same distance west of the Philippine island of Palawan where the Vietnamese survivors are being cared for partys trade critic warned it would cause in creased hardship for the alreadystagnant house building sector He said Sunday the Liberals were partly to blame for the most recent increase the eighth since March 1978 because they had left huge deficit in Canadas account with the rest of the world and huge deficit in government spending Liberal finance critic Herb Gray said in an interview from his Windsor Ont home Its interesting that the Bank of Canada is not following any different policy under the new government than under the previous Liberal one He said he is worried that the harmful side effects of the move might overshadow its stated purpose of keeping foreign money flowing into Canada WILL EXAMINE Interest rate increases can add to infla tionary pressures Gray said will ex amine closely the implications of this in crease to see whether the benefit is outweigh ed by potential negative effects Gray also was worried that the increase might push Canada faster into the economic slowdown already expected as fallout from the recession most economists see developing in the United States Crosbie said he had taken this into account but decided Canadas economic vulnerability made it all the more necessary to prevent more pressure on the dollar He said it is unfair to compare Sundays in crease with those his party had attacked so vigorously in the past because the cir cumstances are different inquest said unlikely in death of four boys By STEPHEN NICHOLLS Of The Examiner CREEMORE Provincial police are awaiting final official
