lifestyle Family draws together in bottle with MS TORONTO CP When they married 23 years ago Dawn and Harold Wakefield were school teachers who shared their spare time on the ski slopes ice rinks tennis and badminton courts But now Mrs Wakefield cant walk because she has multiple sclerosis Her husband must carry her downstairs to do the laundry and lift her in and out of the tub when she has bath They say however theyre as close as they were 23 years ago and just as active in new way They and their two children now are travelling around Eu rope in rented car Mrs Wakefields wheelchair and metal walking aid may make for cramped family travel but it doesnt cramp their style After it years with her ill ness the Wakcficlds still are closelyknit family with crammed social calendar and home filled with humor and warmth But few of Canadas 35000 multiplthsclerosis families are as lucky and now in the Inter national Year of the hild the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is trying to find out how the disease changes family life Marriage breakdown among multiplesclerosis couples is known to be higher than the na tional 25percent average and has been rumored as high as 80 percent But no one knows for sure says Deanna Groetzinger spokesman for the society The only study ever done in 197 in New York state showed the marriagebrcakdown rate three times the average for the area new society subcommittee is studying the social and psy chological effects of the disease on the family Also this sum mer social worker and an anthropologist are working on federallyfundcd study of To ronto multiplesclerosis patients and teenage children The cause of the disease is not known and there is no cure lt hits people in the prime of life usually between ages 20 to 40 and strikes almost two women for every man It causes short circuits in the nerves that control functions such as speech vision limb movement bladder and bowel control No family is ever the same after chronic disease strikes says Dr Ruth Sky who works with the chronically ill at Riv erdalc Hospital in Toronto She said multiple sclerosis Nng itiii adds special stress because one never knows how it will affect particular patient Some become paralysed overnight Others live their entire life with just the symp toms of fatigue and lack of bladder control and if its not recognized as multiple sclerosis they may be accused instead of being lazy drunk or neurotic But most experience see saw swing from bad flareup periods which keep them in bed for months to nearnormal remission its this uncertainty that takes its toll on family life Dr Sky said Canada is highrisk area although no one knows why highltrisk area is wherever 40 people in every 100000 have the disease Parts of Canada have 130 victims per 100000 people recent study by Dr Walter Hader of Saskatchewan shows How did the Wakefields sur vive the stress Some of their success is sheer luck but most is the result of determination planning and patience Wakefield said he and his wife decided long ago to squeeze every ounce of living from every day and theyve kept their vow The Wakefield family Down Harold Shane l2 and Sonya l4 pack their things for trip to Europe where they are vacationing despite Dawns disablll ty Mrs Wakefield is victim of multiple sclerosis but the family has decid ed thof wont cramp their style CP Photo Spirituol diet melts pounds Ry SHEILACOO new diet program known as the Christ centred approach to weight watching is suc ceeding for countless people where other methods have fail ed The program known as ill combines the principles of diet discipline and discipleship Small groups of eight people plus two leaders meet once ii week to vcightriii pray and help each other to live more disciplined lives Founded by ministers wife in the liiitcd States the move ment qtiickly caught on spread to Canada and is now mushrooming into small towns in Barrie group of women from Collier tnitcd Church the New Testament Fellowship in lnnisfil and the Salvation Ar my have been practising the tenets of the program for some weeks now and the Anglican community is looking into starting ll group in the fall SPIRITlAI PROGRAM Kit Lawrence who leads the Collier St group iiong with Suzanne Mcunicr says Lil is not just ii diet program but spiritual program for commit ted Christians It teaches self discipme in all areas so that you physical Situation is manifestation of your physical state she says Ruth Lowe who leads ii in Wasaga Beach says 3D works because of its sharing and caring aspect The small groups permit p80 lc to really get to know eac other Its Xpltlllllil$ttl ing to people she maintains The diet is 1200 calorie dict very similar to ones used by members of the Dltl Workshop or Weight Watchers More ex changes are allowed however and members are not expected to show dramatic weight loss in ashort time The concept allows for slow steady weight loss over 36 week period Initially members make it commitment to follow the 3D program for l2 weeks followed by two more week sessions in which new weight control techniques are taught Members have adopted con cept similar to Alcoholics Anonymous in that they phone each other up in times of stress and temptation SEEK DIRECTION In addition to following the diet the group seeks Gods will and direction in helping one another in the various areas of their lives where selfdiscipline is problem 1uch more than prayer group tl requires mutual commitment of openness and honesty and leads to real car mg in Christ for the others in the group initiators of the program ItASUlIttl that people who over ate were also undisciplined in other areas if their lives For instance mic person may hate doing housework and before tackling the job others constantly put off other things they dislike The new program teaches that if you learn to discipline your life with the help of friends who care then you can learn not to overeat The religious aspect calls for daily scripture readings prayer for other members of the group and invocation of Gods help to learn to live for Christ instead of self lixpcricncc has shown that lit programs work best when they are under the authority of church They have the ap proud of the pastor or priest to whom the group leaders report each week Meetings are limited to one hour following the initial weight recording if left open ended they can casin consume two to three hours An offshoot of the program is that mcmlwrs of different denominations are getting to know each other better MELT The llIlHtlItlIl is ecumen cial and as one woman put it We are breaking down religious barriers as well at melting away fat One woman told her group that the program had changed her life and her husbands 21 used to be very critical and judgmental she said But 3D taught me to accept Gods will rather than my own She explained that she at first had difficulty in determining the differences between the two learned that when it was snap judgment it was my will taking over she said When took time to pray and ask for guidance it was usually Gods will revealed Others claim the 3D diet group works where others dont because it is Christ cen tred totally People who cant do it alone are doing it with Gods help Ruth Lowe says So impressed were some men with the change in their wives not only in appearance but in attitudes that mens SD movement sprung up in the States Men may attend meetings here also The movement has also been helpful to people who want to gain weight Taking time to sit down and eat proper ly is also deemed an important part of self discipline The 3D movement is non profit organization Teaching materials are purchased by churches from the US based head off ice then resold to group members at cost The first kit covering 12 week period consists of brochures the diet plan daily food sheets with which to record food intake recom mended reading list bible study guides memory verse packet discipline require ments One cannot join 3D group at any time The program follows sequence so it is important to get in at the beginning of ses sion Collier St women are just concluding one 12week session and the group members there will start on the second phase They hope to begin an new group in the fall as do the Anglicans at St Giles Church Garden NOtes By JEAN GABLE Barrie Horticultural Society Some of the loveliest spring flowers are biennials These are plants that you plant this year and they bloom next year and only last one year which really means they must be planted every year if you want to keep them in your border Some of these are Foxglove Canterbury Bells Forgetme nots Pansies Violas Sweet William and English Daisies Lucky for me got very good catch of Foxglove Canter bury Bells and few perennials Aubrelia Perennial Alyssum or Basket of Gold and Pyrethrum These plants have are ready to set out in spare spot in the vegetable garden where they will develop into good sized plants can transplant in September to where need them You still have time to grow any of the above mentioned in flats or cold frame or even in the open garden providing you keep them moist and shaded from hot sun The soil you plant them in should be very friable It should be level and pressed down before seeding Dont sow seeds too deep instructions are on every package The worst part about planting in the open garden is that you cant pro tect the seedbed from those sudden downpours we seem sub ject to These wash out the seeds and tender plants and bury them MARK COLOR Forgetmenots are weed to some people That is because they dont pull them before they go to seed grow white pink and blue forgetmenots and have no problem with too many Soon as plant is done blooming pull it and plant in the garden enough of each to give you some for fall planting in the borders You will need to mark the color you can paint sticks pink blue and white and insert one in each clump for identification Lupins and Columbine can also be planted now Soak Lupins in water overnight as you would peas or beans Some people are bothered by groundhogs They can make mess of
