If you are in the Barrie District and own small row boat chances are there is swimmer who cotild use you as guide boat in the Kempenfest crasstheabay swim Aug According to officials who help organize the swim there is no lack of competitirs ready to accept the challenge of swimm ing 2000 metres from Minets Point to Government Dock However the competitors are responsible for arranging their own guide boat which in recent years has proven to be no easy task Swimmers need someone with small boat with oars no motors allowed and two people to man the boat One rows vi bite the other watches the swimmer and hopefully keeps him on course If has been difficult for the swimmers to find someone with the right sized boat said Bob Hollywood of the Chamber of Commerce one of the organiz ing bodies behind Kempenfest Some swimmers have had to resort to having canoes as their guide boats in previous years but canoes are really not ideal because of the difficulty of keeping them on course KEEP ON OIRSE Keeping the swimmers on course has always been small problem for organizers Last year they had large target marker on Government Dock This year they plan to use four large pieces of Styrofoam blazed orangeacross the line of the course The theory is that the boat should guide the swimmer said Hollywood But it hasnt always worked in practice Last year there were 20 swimmers who took part in the swim Organizers this year are confident that at least that many and probably more will cross the bay in August The idea behind the swim is the fun of it Hollywood said There are lot of good swim mers in the Barrie area and its chance for them to see if they can do it Its challenge Many swimmers seem to thrive on the crossthcbay swim returning the next year to challenge themselves once more
