tie leaving lellco with one gleamage on horses By HELEN MASON What do you do with the horse you feel is too old to stand heavy riding What if you become unable to ride and dont want your favorite mount in home where he might receive indifferent care In England there are equine retirement homes where horse lovers can keep that superanimated pony the pen sioned hunter or any horse thats too old to work full day Many owners say The horse has given his time and loyalty to them now its our turn It is this concern for horses that prompted the opening of the Ontario Humane Society Shelter Farm on Hwy 11 south of Newmarket Of course many owners trade in their old horse for younger model put him out to pasture to fend for himself or sell him to meat dealer But for the others the real horse lovers their pet has been family hobby and beloved friend as well as companion and they are unwilling to let him fall into the hands of horse traders or see him waste away on sparse pasture Its to thses people the ntario Humane Sticiety offers the services of its Shelter Farm In early 1978 Don Hcpworth the societys chief inspector him for meat moved his family onto the farm They refenced and renovated until the official opening on Oct that year Family helps run shelter The farm is now run by Don Hepworth who has the British Horse Society Advanced Instructors Certification His 197 yearold daughter Kate is the chief groom His wife takes care of public relations and lends sympathetic ear to the bereaved owners who use the pet Cemetery on the grounds Since its opening the shelter has taken in large herd of cattle and complete zoo But its the horses ponies and donkey that are the main attraction Mrs llepworth says the farm provides service to older people who cant ride any longer known resident Happy the 16yearold first pensioner is the bestknown Carol Holman moved Happy to the farm after she retired she wanted him to live his last years in peace and quiet Ms Holman visited Happy regularily to read him the dai ly paper The pair frequently ate lunch together It was in Happys stall that Miss Holman became ill just before Christmas When Ms Holman died in January Happy was donated to the Humane Society which plans to use him for educational purposes Its important for school children to be taugh look after animals and how to behave around them says Mrs Hepworth She encourages children to visit the farm Theres an old school portable there The Society hopes to use as classroom Can an arthritic horse or one with breathing problems be healthy enough to use for instruction The Hepworths have found that couple of tablespoons of cider vinegar fed twice daily in the grain ration relives some of the discomfort of arthritis Ms Hepworth saw the pottasium in cider vinegar also stops the horse from chewing than replacing stalls The family also adds two tablespoons of corn syrup to the feed to improve the horses coat beans In other atom division games Maher
