Stars of new CBC show prefer to work in west WINNIPEG CPI Win nipeg performers Gerry and 212 stars of new CBC variety Show say passing up the chance to move to Quebec has been the key to their success Gerry Paquin 31 and 32 yearold Gerard Ziz Jean By STEPHE Gravenhurst Morley Calvert legiate told the audience that Calverts right and hes no bandshell is long overdue Al Moat leader of the Barrie stage band made the same suggestion recently at an out door concert at Sunnidale Park cular pier uipped with painted back rop Its setup to renovate this year Barrie elaborate bandshell would suit the needs of local groups perfectly Now that the city recreation department is sponsoring week ly park concerts the need for bandshell is obvious If the city feels it cant afford to buil services clubs could undertake the several of the clubs could join forces to build bandshell Sunnidale Park is one locat mediately another is Centenni rediscovered the beauty of its to draw more people to the lake than with bandshell where people can enjoy an evening of music during the summer months The musical talent is certainly here Barrie has high school bands symphony orchestra several excellent jazz bands and many solo performers who deserve the proper omensMam Barrie needs bandshell Of The Examiner Halfway through Sundays concert at Gull Lake Park in showcase its hands and performers bandshell is hardly major project but its something the city needs to provide focal point for music in the sum mer The outdoor concerts in Gravenhurst are held on cir have been close friends and mu sical partners since they were about 12 and attended boarding school together Going to Quebec has always been natural option for the two francoManitobans But despite abundant opportunity GAUER director of the Central Col Barrie needs bandshell to alone in suggesting that ound system walkway and that cost reported $100000 doesnt need something so one surely one of the local project Better yet ion that comes to mind im al Park Now that Barrie has waterfront what better way surroundings for summer concerts bviously Barrie could never match the scale of the con cert seriees held at Ontario Place in Toronto where big namc performers are featured every night for almost four months but on smaller scale Barrie could offer the same kind of variety and the same kind of surroundings for sum mer concerts bandshell could be the starting point for an ambitious longterm project to promote festival whether folk jazz or tourist attraction for the city adding to the cultural events like Kempenfest and the Gryphon Theatre that are already drawmg attention to the city Maybe Barrie needs group like the Gravenhurst Civic Music Association to promote summer concerts Certainly it needs some leadership peopl project like the bandshell Its not really gamble because the musicians are here and the audiences are here People like Calvert and Moat know that now its time for the rest of the community to show some ITS THE ummer music here music pop could become major willing to take gamble on initiative CANINE COMEDY CAPER OF THE CENTURY must Ownu to make the move they have al ways decided to stay Because they stayed they say they have been free to develop their own style away from the influence of Quebecois music The young performers say their music is more rooted in France and the chansonnier style of Charles Aznavour and Gilbert Becaud than it is in French Canada iEvery time we went East wed get all kinds of offers Wed come home from Quebec and say OK were moving Gerry said recently But in the weeks that follt lowed the enthusiasm would invariably wane and the move would be quietly forgotten Maybe because were from the Prairies we take our time getting around to things he explained Another reason they remained here in the former city of St Boniface now part of Winnipeg where many franco Manitobans reside is that language alone doesnt guarantee success in Quebec Skinner dies Cornelia Otis Skinner the actress and writer who co authored Our Hearts Were Young and Gay died Monday at her home in New York Orangemen march in parade Orangemen from across the
