rv Those individuals fort ate enough to have servants should treat them wi rtain degree of respect Not only does this make for ore armonious household but it also serves as peacekeeping vice You see throughout cri inal history servants have fre quently turned on their ployers using guns bedpans teapots knives and bare hands They have even been known to perform nasty indignities to the bodies of their former employers These bizarre and cruel acts illustrate definite lack of respect Kate Webster didnt know the mean ing of the word Kate was born Catherine Lawlor in the quaint little village of Killane Co Wexford Ireland in 1849 From the time she was able to think for herself Catherine had decided that farmers life was not for her She jumped at the first op portunity to leave the soil His name was Webster and his profession was sea captain While still in her teens Catherine became Kate Webster on to jail By now Kate had taken on hard countenance with pierc ing eyes and perpetual scowl To pass the time while the good captain was at sea she amused herself by stealing Un fortunately she wasnt very good at it and was continually being hustled off to jail It became so annoying to Kate that she left Ireland and made her way to Liverpool where in 1867 she found herself in the pokey for no less than three years Upon her release she gravitated to London where she found lodgings in Rose Gardens Hammersmith Around this time in the rather nomadic existence of Kate Webster two important events took place Kate made friends with her neighbors Mr and Mrs Porter in Ham mersmith She also became extremely close to man nam ed Strong In fact she was so close to Strong that she gave birth to his offspring on April 19 1874 Deserted by Strong she continued to steal to support herself and her new son In 1879 Kate heard of an old English lady who was looking for general servant Mrs Thomas was in the classical English sense an eccentric She lived in rather gloomy two storey graystone house at Mayfield Cottages Rich mon Mrs Thomas had moved about since her second husband had gone to his great reward in 1873 She had hard time keeping lone servant due to the fact that she seemed to en joy berating them for some slight or imagined negligence of their duties No doubt about it Mrs Thomas was not an easy old doll to get along with Kate applied for the servants position As fate would have it Mrs Thomas was impressed and hired the confirmed thief on the spot Kate placed her child with friends and moved in with Mrs Thomas Upsetting Shortly thereafter Mrs Thomas directed one of her rages towards Kate Instead of cowering in comer reaction we can only assume Mrs Thomas had become accustomed to Kate answered the mistress of the home back in no uncer tain terms This turn of events upset Mrs Thomas no end As the days went by Mrs Thomas knew she had to dismiss Kate The fact was that she was too terrified of the younger woman to give her notice Finally after Kate had been in her employ only few weeks she summoned up her courage and told her servant she was no longer required as at the end of the month Feb 28th Mrs Thomas lived in fear until at last the mth came Kate implored her mistress to allow her stay three more days until March 3rd Probably out of fear Mrs Thomas ac quiesced On Sunday March Mrs Thomas attended the Presbyterian service at Lecture Hall in Richmond Those who spoke to her say she appeared nervous and agitated She returned to her home and into oblivion What happened behind the close doors of Number Mayfield Cottages that Sunday evening Kate and Mrs Thomas had one of their regular disagreements with Mrs Thomas almost apologizing to her servant as was now her custom The mistres of the house went upstairs Kate followed spewing verbal abuse In fit of rate Kate shoved Mrs Thomas down the stairs The elderly woman lay still where she fell Her rage still not satisfied Kate pounded on the prostrate form of Mrs Thomas She clasped her hands firmly around her victims neck and proceeded to choke her Mrs Thomas didnt move but was not dead Kate one of the cruelest women who ever lived carried Mrs Thomas to the kitchen table and proceeded to cut and hack off parts of her body Some parts were burned in the stove Other portions she boiled in copper container en cased in brick structure found in homm in rural England and normally used to boil laundry parcel containing one foot was disposed of that same evening The following day Kate placed most of Mrs Thomas in wooden crate and fastened it securely with strong cord Kate now working to prearranged plan outfitted herSelf In her deceased mistress best dress and jewelry She then placed Mrs Thomas head in black bag and walked out of Number Mayfield Cottages She went to visit the Porters the family whom she had not seen for six years The Porters were understandably surprised to see their old neighbor especially since her circumstances had to ob viously changed for the better Cunning Kate told the Porters that she had married Mr Thomas who had since away Now an aunt had died as well leaving her full of furniture She informed the impressed Porters that she was about to move to Scotland to live with her mother and was going to sell all her newly acquired for nitme The Porters bought the story hook line and sinker While Kate explained her situation over tea and crumpets the black bag containing Mrs Thomas head lay unob trusively at her feet About to take her leave Kate inquired whether Mr Porter Katy Webster chopped up her boss might put her in touch with someone who could assist her in selling off her assets Mr Porter said he knew someone who might fit the bill Tea time over Kate asked further favor of the Porters Could Mr Porter and his teenage son Robert help her with wooden crate she had to move from her home to Ham mersmith Station Not only would they help her with the crate Robert offered to carry her black bag back to her home Kate coughed The trio started off All three made an unscheduled stopover at the Oxford and Cambridge Arms at the foot of Hammersmith Bridge Kate excused herself explaining that she had to deliver her black bag to friend at Barnes As it was not too far away she would attend to it right then and return in few minutes Twenty minutes later Kate did return without the bag To this day Mrs Thomas head has never been found Somewhere along the line everyone agreed that three peo ple would not be required to carry to wooden box As result Mr Porter returned home while Kate and Robert proceeded to Mayfield Cottages The night was pitch black Robert and Kate carried the wooden box containing various parts of Mrs Thomas Once in the middle of Richmond Bridge Kate informed Robert that friend was to meet her right there and take possession of the box She told Robert to wait at the end of the bridge Robert wandered only few yards Ironically he was bit apprehensive about being alone in the dark Suddenly he heard splash moment later Kate showed up and inform ed him that her friend had taken delivery of the box Pieces of meat few days later Henry Wheatley was driving his coal wagon along the banks of the Thames near Barnes Bridge Henry spotted an old box on the bank Making his way down to the box he opened it and peered inside He gazed at what appeared to be nothing more than pieces of meat which ap peared to be cooked or boiled Henry thought the best thing to do would be to advise the police Doctors later identified the parts as having belonged to an elderly woman On March John Church broker was introduced to Kate by Mr Porter Church agreed to sell Kates furniture During the next few days he was seen entering and leaving the murder house several times Church the Porters and of course Kate read the horrible news of the gruesome find along the Thames Church gave Kate deposit toward the proceeds he would receive for selling her furnishings On March 17 van pulled up and began loading the furniture At this point Mrs Ives who lived next door and who happened to own Mrs Thomas house came over to inquire why Mrs Thomas had not given her any notice that she was moving When Kate was informed of the inquiry she mustered all her strength and called on Mrs Ives Now returning to her real identity of Kate the servant she told Mrs Ives she didnt know what had happened to Mrs Thomas This did not sit well with Mrs lves and Kate knew by her reaction that she had to move fast She gathered up her son and took off directly for her birthplace Killane Ireland where she found refuge with an uncle While sorting out Mrs Thomas clothing prior to selling them hurch found Several letters written by Mr Menhennick After reading the letters Church felt that Mr Menhennick was writing to someone other than the Mrs Thomas he knew He and Porter decided to pay visit to Mr Menhennick that very evening Both men quickly became convmced that the real Mrs Thomas was much older than the lady they had been dealing with They reported the whole matter to the Richmond Police Found letters It didnt take the police long to question all the principals Kate who had fled to the most conspicuous spot on earth for her her hometown was quickly traced to her uncles home Kate first accused Church of being the real murderer Then she tried to pin the rap on Porter But each of these two gentlemen while having associated with Kate directly after the murder proved to have airtight alibis and could not have been involved in the crime Kate stood trial and was convicted of the murder of Mrs Thomas 0n the evening before she was to be executed when all hope of evading the scaffold was gone Kate con fessed In detail to the killing and dismemberment of Mrs Thomas Next day Tuesday July 29 1879 Kate Webster
