COHEN Of The Examiner Fridays strike by Bell Canada techni cians in Ontario and Quebec was another in series of surprise walkouts by members of the Communication Workers of Canada The union has welllaid plan of walkouts although Fridays was an instant thing said Duncan Beattie president of CWC local 40 which includes Barrie Orillia Coll ingwood Newmarket and Midland We didnt know until preceding he said He said the walkout was an indication that employees support their union and signal to the company that if workers reject the contract offer Bell Canada and the union should go back to the bargaining table Norma McCall Bell Canada commercial manager in Barrie says the firm is waiting for the votes to come in next week and at that point the company may have to try something else The walkouts come at the companys busiest time of year when large number of requests arrive for telephone installations and repairs for cottages Requests for ser vice orders on strike day have to be rescheduled McCall said and priority jobs are handled by management We recovered quite nicely from the last strike she said The general public is becoming more aware of whats going on They must understand because there are minimal number of complaints Beattie admits the strikes came at crucial time for the company but says it is the best time to get the unions demands across Its the same for independent food stores have removed or will remove llzlitre soft drink bottles from the shelves Loblaws Dominion and Miracle Mart stores have under instruction from head of 12 hours fice removed the bottles from their stores following request from the federal depart ment of consumer and corporate affairs Beckers and Mikes Milk stores have followed suit The government will not ban the bottles outright but will study the matter further said Allan Lawrence minister of the depart ment Although Lawrence said he would ban the bottles if he could It is not the govern ments job to dictate to industry how to solve problems The governments decision to regulate rather than ban the bottles was attacked as unsafe Friday by Herb Gray former Liberal consumer affairs minister He said priority must be given to public safety and the government should im mediater ban the torpedoshaped narrow necked bottles which have exploded injur ing at least 54 persons recently The bottles are pressurized to three times the atmospheric pressure at sea level and have tendency to explode spontaneously Last week woman in Kitchener Waterloo supermarket was severely injured when 12 litre bottle exploded spon taneously as she passed by shelf Peter DeVries 0f Fuda Food Centre Oro totinn said the bottles should not be recall ed but redesigned They are good sellers he said Their popularity he said is solely because of their size most people would rather buy one large bottle than two small ones DeVries was amazed to learn the bottles could be dangerous was very surprised he said Weve never had any problems with them here Although Fuda still has some litre bot tles in the store they will all be removed by Wednesday said DeVries At Jeans Variety on Burton Avenue the bottles are still being sold They say theyve never had any problems with them Some Barrie stores like Dycks Food Market on Collier Street never sold the 12 litre bottles The Canadian Retail Council has urged its members to remove
