More unwed mothers opt to keep children TORONTO CP The On tario secretary for social devel opment says she is disturbed by the number of unwed mothers in the province who are keeping their children rather than giv ing them up for adoption Margaret Birch told news conference Monday that 88 per cent of unwed mothers in 1977 kept their children compared with less than onethird of un wed mothers in the late 19605 Ministry figures show that 511 children were adopted in 1966 compared with 5077 chil dren in 1977 Mrs Birch said she does not think young unwed girl is able to look after child Often young mother will keep her child for short time but later finds the pressure too great and places the child with childrens aid society she said By then the child may be abused or may be suffering from emotional problems Mrs Birch said ARE NOT PREPARED Earlier Monday the ministry of community and social serv ices released report which said an increase in the num of abused and neglected babies is the result of unwed teenage mothers not being prepared emotionally or financially to care for their children The report on the 63 child and youth institutions in Ontario including 11 maternity homes showed dramatic increase in the last 10 years in the number of unwed mothers 16 years and younger entering maternity homes The number of 15yearold girls who had children has risen by 76 per cent between 1976 and 1978 the report said Teenage mothers are eligible for $337 month in mothers allowance welfare payments but require ad ditional social services it said Ontario to take leading role in
