better if he owned percentage of the space thriller in which he stars Halfway through produc tion realized that it was going to be highly successful film he said offered to trade my entire salary for half percen tage point Ron Shusett the gatecutive producer just laugh Not that Skerritt believed in Alien from the beginning When first read the script was not impressed Im not fan of science fiction and anyway its not the kind of film that can be visualized from script And originally the pic ture was going to be made on fairly low budget Then Ridley Scott was assigned as director and Sker ritt reread the script with new perspective He was also encouraged when 20th Century Fox elevated the budget to $10 million Alien might well boost Tom Skerritt to the star status that has eluded him since his 1962 debut in War Hunt which featured another young actor named Robert Redford Skerritt almost turned the trick with MASH That was another script that wasnt impressive in the TOM SKERRITT feeling good reading said the Detroitham actor But knew Bob Altman and had faith that he would turn it into something that was wild crazy and delightful spent much of my time trying to convince Elliot and Don of that they thought it was crap The irony is that MASH brought new fortune to Elliot Gould and Donald Sutherland but nothing to costar Skeuitt The added irony is that Skerritt declined chance to play in the television version thought they would make it into just another sitcom he said didnt realize itWas go ing to be quality show They eliminated my character from the series so now people have CTV
