minutes before her first students arrive at local dance school still intend to be teacher but will always teach dance and always take dance lessons In the narrow hallway of the Regional Academy of Dance on Dunlop Street Miss Grant sits and talks about dance how she first started lessons in Bar rie in Grade and later studied at Western in London Ontario how she feels modern dance isnt attracting the number of students it should in Barrie Miss Grant is the only modern dance teacher in Bar rie Shes returned to the city for the summer to teach dance at the Academy along with Joan Mallet the ballet instruc tor At 23 Miss Grant can discuss dance with the insight and sensitivity of an experienc ed professional She makes her art one of the most difficult to translate into words comprehensible and compelling In ballet the body does things its not natural to do The modern dance move ment started with people like Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham Its movement away from ballet CREATIVE SIDE Duncan explored the creative side of dance the freedon of movement and the freedom of choreography Grahams teachings are based on the idea of centre that builds power and strength allowing greater freedom of feeling in dance Anyone can hold position but attitude is important she says In modern dance theres more sense of earthness and greater sense of space Youre more aware of the elements of dance the focus of the ballerina is very specific Miss Grant quotes one of her Station fined $2000 for broadcasting violation PETERBOROUGH Ont CP Kawartha Broad casting Ltd owners of with Isabelle Hobson local dance instructor She learned the basis of movement from Mrs Hobson and continued to study with her until Grade 13 At Central Col legiate she performed in school musicals and was active in gymnastics She also designed routines for the gymnastics team Miss Grants introduction to dance was much more vague than it is for most dance students Most kids start when theyre four or five years old and follow dance syllabus go ing torhough grade system and taking exams had freer exposure to dance until univier sity INADEQUATE At Western she became member of performing dance group felt inadequate at first she says That was my first experience with modern dance Later she choreographed two major works for the group and spend summer in rigorous dance program at York University Dance will continue to play an important part in her life She travels to Toronto in the fall to begin work on an educa tion degree at OCE She will be teacher not dancer but her training in dance will Federation of Symphony Orchestras Wendy Reid told the annual meeting of the Huronia Sym phony Association Thursday evening that this contradicts the important role played by or chestras in the SPEARHEAD The orchestra can be the spearhead for other co operative efforts in the com munity giving cohesion and identity to the community It can enhance celebrations and social events but it must Miss Reid the orchestra can provide economic benefits to the community third to half of the orchestra budget comes from government grants That money is returned to the community because an achestra is labor intensive and those salareis are returned to the local community Promotion of the orchestra is essential to its survival said Miss Reid The volunteers must play the advocacy role is the orchestra is to survive she said We need people to tell the symphonys story in the community At the annual meeting which followed Miss Reids speech treasurer David Croft reported that the Huronia Symphony is now in the strongest financial postition ever The symphony should enter the 197980 season with more than $12000 in the bank And while tickets sales were down more than $1000 this year from the 197778 season dona tions have increased by 60 per cent SUCCESSFUL YEAR Arthur Burgin conductor of the orchestra described the past season as very suc cessful year and predicted steady growth in the size quali ty and enthusiasm of the Huronia Symphony Noel Stephenson president of the symphony association for the past three years told the meeting that professional uartet may be hired with help
