reading about possible health hazards can you give me any advice As with other appliances consumers must follow the directions for use but with microwave ovens it is im perative that consumers meticuloust obey manufacturers instructions and never get slap happy The health dangers arise from leakages of the microwave energy used to cook the food and these are most likely to occur from the door and it interlocks of which there must be at least two Anvone buying microwave oven should have it tested oncelit is installed in the home They are tested before leav ing the manufacturer but think of the many rough and ready roads they may take before getting to their destina tions Furthermore the Consumers Association of anada recommends that owner of microwave ovens have them tested at least once year Microwave ovens emit more radiation empty than when food is being cooked and for this reason the Canadian Stati dards Association is asking that manufacturers design control that prevents an oven from starting when empty Also this association is trying to implement safety warn ing on microwave ovens against use by persons who have heart pacemakers although such danger has not yet been proven Metal cooking dishes shouldnt be used because the metal reflects the energy like mirror and dorsnt allow this energy to heat The door seal must be kept extremely clean but steel wool or metal scrubbing pds must never be used Tests show that minute indentations not seen by the nak ed eye may be present and this damages the vital protec tion already given by the manufacturers Microwave ovens tend to leak more with age so it is up to the consumer to regularly have the appliance tested Radiation tudies are being very actively researched ill present and standard for the maximum exposure safety should be arrived at by the Ontario government shortly Meanwhile strictly obey maintenance instructions hvc the oven tested regularly and dont let children use one Fur ther details about microwave ovens were compiled in well researched report by the Consumers Association of Canada in April 1978 and test results of eight such ovens weregiven Pollys Pointers Elastic keeps sheets on bed DEAR POLLY Please help me My gorgeous new satin comforter is driving me out of my mind It keeps sliding off the bed do not know what to use that will not damage my comforter hope someone has solution for me Lucille DEAR LUCILLE You do have bothersome problem The best suggestion have is to use piece of elastic about an inch wide and long enough to go all around your mattress Sew ends together and slip around the mattress tabout or inches above the lower edge Put comforter on in the position you would like it and then with strong thread tack through the comforter and top of the elastic every inches or so When you put the comforter on the bed at night slip the elastic around the mattress Any sort of pinning will doubtless end with tear or so in the comforter POLLY DEAR POLLY use the doublesaucer method to avoid water spots on shelves and tables where have potted plants put normalsize saucer under plants pot and then put this in larger one If plant is watered too much and the first saucer does not hold all the excess water the backup saucer catches it No more racing for towel to soak up the excess Another solution for this is to cut square of indoor outdoor carpet in circle that is the size of the saucer being used When cutting the square leave the plastic on the back so the circle can be easily moved and not have to be pulled up The plastic back also adds to the waterproof abilities of the carpet circle JON DEAR POLLY Newspapers torn in thin strips make good substitute for the expensive product we normally use in our cat boxes The print on the paper seems to do away with the odor Change every day and be sure strips are not too wide Tip box over on newspaper roll it up and throw away Give kitty time to get used to it and both of you will love it MILLIE would be aimed at increasing wage levels for females im proving job counselling and training and creating more flexible conditions of work for parents How this will be accomplish ed is not decided MacDonald later told reporters It is deliberately vague And he said there is no con tradiction between this plan and separate plan to reduce the public service by 60000 in three years move that would close jobs for men and women in the bureaucracy This will be done in such way that women are not disproportionately affected hesaid The mechanics of this have not yet been worked out either MacDonald said His goal was to ensure men and women are equally affected by the public service reduction MacDonald also reiterated Clarks election campaign pro mise to use government con tracts tool to encourage the private sector to hire and pro mote more woan and pay equal wages Contracts would be suspended or refused com panies which do not comply with yctrtobewrittcn rules on women employees However MacDonald played down another election promise to allow free vote in the Commons on whether abortion should be removed from the Criminal Code hope to avoid it he said after stating it is low priority and indicating he would not suggest such vote himself VIEWED THROUGH TUBE TOLEDO Ohio AP Fred Paster brought home some long cardboard tubes and told his sonxMark four and daughter Lisa three
