have no option in the matter your feet are bound to place themselves properly provided that you have the right Pedal power art of stroking By ED HARPER Chay Riding bike is pretty basic riding it properly is something else Frankly it is amazing how many people who have been cycling all their lives have no idea just how much easier and more pleasant they could make their For start of course you need the right bicycle Second you need to ride it the correct and most economical way and third you need to dress right for it How then do you ride properly Half the battle once youve learned the basics of steering and balance is master pedalling Never ride with the arch of your foot on the pedal Always use the ball of your foot to make the best use of your leg muscles which are after all the examiner Friday Jun 22 1979 length clips Toe clips are made in three sizes small medium and large Be sure that you have the right size clips before using them It is unfortunate that some cyclists start off with the long clips and get into the habit of using them finding it difficult to change to the medium size later on stroke the pedalling this way For pedalling to be effective the gearing must be right There is tendacy in North America to use too small gear ratio so as to tackle hill without getting out of the saddle Yet occasional outofthesaddle work dancing on the pedals helps alleviate tedium and gives muscles chance to stretch out in different fashion which is way of avoiding cramps Stroking is art of pedalling Clips will ensure the smoothest pedal action The art is to pedal round in circle rather than pushing up and down This known as ankling it ensures that effort is being transmitted to the pedals not only on the way down but in perfect circle This is know as pedal action and you can get the best out of machine if you become expert at Find gear which gives resistance yet never feels slugv gish Big gear or small the idea is to be supple rather than force the pedals around laboriously or pedal so rapidly as to bounce on the saddle and lose power Always change gear down slightly before hitting rise in the road Changing gear while actually climbing hill leads to rough changes grinding and the danger of broke chain except with hub type system Never stop pedalling while in the process of changing gears Try to anticipate situations When going downhill dont brake Steering maching while braking is less accurate Try to anticipate situations watch the vehicle in front but keep an eye on those up the roadtoo On hilly road downhill speed can be an advantage and get you halfway up the other side so why waste it by freewheeling when it is possible to maintain your speed by little easy pedalling dangerous When going into comer think ahead dont brake on the corner but as you approach it Let the brake off as you go round it to prevent skidding and loss of control You dont have to treat every ride as race but trips to and from work will be less tedious if tackled at brisk pace Plodding along can be demoralizing Of course you dont want to work up sweat but keep rolling at good pace Choose your route with care Look for roads you have travelled before and avoid detours or bad stretches of road These Can make bicycling unpleasant dirty and downright Remember to always ride within your capability and dont But hes never fought at such high level of competition he will in San Juan think this will probably be as tough as the Olympics said Mann In my weight category some of the best in the world will be there really dont get overly ambitious goals For the novice circular route is preferrable for pleasure jaunts that way you are never too far from home Always carry money for emergencies Keep your machine clean in good repair good
