Week proclaimed by Mayor Ross Archer June 14 This is an annual event that takes place each summer run by most student employment centres in Ontario As well as our Barrie centre both Midland and ollingwood offices will be holding their llircaStudcnt Week the last week in June Our main objective is to en courage employers in the area to sit up and take note of their community student body We want them to recognize the need for students to be given the chance to prove themselves as hard depen dable workers This is an im portant time in the month because high school students will have by then completed all final exams and they will be out in great numbers looking for job These students need your support as an employer for day week month At the Student Centre we have chosen goal of 500 job placements for this month Help make it hapa pen To kick off HireaStudent Week we have planned many Eastview wins again Eastview Secondary School has again won the Olivetti Trophy for an un precedented fourth year The trophy is awarded to business students ob taining high scores in competition sponsored by the Simcoe County business education teachers Typewriting awards go to Susan Shielke Tim Conlon Marie Sternberg Cindy Boyd Shelley MacDonald and Beth Richardson from Eastview Secondary School Examiner Photo events On Monday morning local dignitaries and employers will be answering phones in our office They include Mayor Ar cher Ron Stewart and Arch Brown During the week there will be radio show involving hiring student hlcp on KBB Included also will be babysitting clinics for all students interested in babysitting this summer Here they will learn the art of babysitting As well we will be distributing flyers to many shopping areas around the city On June 29 in the afternoon we will be gathering all employers names that hired student week to be pooled together into draw Iheemployers name that is chosen will be given day of free labor by one of our staff at the centre Finally special baseball game has been scheduled to finish off the week In addition to these special events we also have radio ads that can be heard on both radio stations and each morning of chemicals in the agricultural industry has seldom sunk far below the sur face Despite the recent controver sy over the provincial governe ments use of the weed killer 24D however the control of pesticides continues to tip the scale in favor of safety says crop specialist with the ministry of agriculture and foods officein Alliston From food production point of view the regulations and controls are heck of lot better than those we have on the highway says Chuck Kingsbury They have increased to the point where to be honest con sider them ridiculous None of the chemicals cur rently used as herbicides or weed killers insecticides or fungicides have the residual ef fects of the once popular DDT and are carefully screened before being released in the en vironment Kingsbury says They have to go through process of screening for toxici ty for their effects on eX perimental animals such as rats and guinea pigs and these trials extend over period of two to five years he says The process explains Dr Don Huntley of the ministry of enviornments pesticide ad visory committee begins at the federal level Under Canadian law pesticides can only be used after they are registered by Agriculture Canada says Dr Huntley The bulk of the initial testing is done by the manufacturers whose data is evaluated by Agriculture Canada TESTED FURTHER The department of health and welfare carry out further tests to determine the health hazards to humans before the chemicals are approved for use at the pro vincial level Dr Huntley says The provinces can add modifications to the screening process and have the authority to regulate the chemicals use and licensing of persons who apply for it he says In Ontario the advisory com mittee is constantly reviewing data on new products listing the hazards and recommending methods of use Dr Huntley says It is the provincial ministry of agriculture and food which makes the final recommenda tion to local farmers as to which herbicides insecticides Two charged for beer theft Two Alliston men were charged Tuesday with stealing beer from Molsons Brewery on Highway 400 south of Bar rte Police said two men parked car on the highway near
