HELEN MASON Lat weeks column told of the first day of our Immile campingt In this weeks column we travel portion of the Heritage trail from Phelpston to Midland follow an old railway bed to Waubaushene and move up the Trans Canada Hwy at The second days trail followed tornup railway line bet ween Phelpston and Midland This is part of the Heritage Trail running from Burlington to Tobermcry Its cinder track ran between young stands of evergreen before enter ing open farmland The sun beat on our sore necks Flies attacked the horses until they swished restlessly but repellent protected the horses from all but the most vicious of them Pat and cut leafy switches periodically flicking the horses bellies with them we rode Sometimes we leaned back and down to brush the sensitive dock groin area unreachable by flailing trail North of Elmvale farmer had fenced off the rightof way and was grazing goats on the former roadbed We join ed nearby highway then climbed back onto the railwy em bankment where it crossed the tarmac The horses cantered easily between overhanging trees as we hurried towards our Midland campsite We admired summer constellations That night Pat and inhaled the fragrance of freshly mowed hay as we admired the summer constellations We wore toques to keep our feet warm During those first days they began to dehydrate despite the extra mineral in their oat ration Our host suggested freechoice blue salt After that Bold One lapped handful at every rest stop his tongue searching for the particles bet ween my fingers second railway bed provided part of the third days ride At first it was stoney and uneven making trotting dangerous By pm when our hair clothes and mouths felt as dusty Silva 73 per linear foot on this handsome durable outdoor beneath broken bridge forming three poolsThe last would make great swimming hole Eagerly we pushed our mounts across the sandbar tied them and waded in fullyclothed As we soaped each layer of clothing we removed it until we lay naked on sunwarmed roe Suddenly the sound of voices sent us scrambling for our clothes Our isolated swimming hole was the beach of the Baers Den campers park near Hwy 12 west of Waubaushene Youre welcome any time the owner assured us Campers like you dont leave any mess Reassured we continued on our way to the TransCanada Hwy where we spent the night in the backyard of quarter horse farm That night Bold One cringed when massaged his back Morning dawned hot and windless as we entered the southern section of the Canadian Shield The only way through this area is to follow the side of the Trans Canada for 17 endless miles of rock swamp and heat This section of the highway has no gravel shoulders Frer quent swamps rock outcroppings and gullcys make the dit ches
