remembers Harr ris Steele one of the five founders the waterline reached up past what is today The gateway and boat shelter consisted of only small shack and rickety garage There was practically nothing there just stretch of shoreline says Steele who with Maurice McLaren Ozzie Rowe Reg Welham and Colonel SA Lee purchased the property and began the task of building fullfledged yacht club Today 27 years later there are 120 member families and 75 boats anchored at the clubs everexpanding factlity and long waiting list The club holds regular races competes with other clubs in Lake Siincoe and Kempenfelt Bay plans junior sailing program and is constantly working at its chartered aims to encourage boat building amateur sailing and yachting and above all to maintain water safety on the bay The club is safetyconscious says Bob Bogardis newly elccted commodon and theres never any shortage of Keinpenfelt Bay boaters willing to test that worthy motive Just before the clubs recent seasonopening sailpast an overcrowded illequipped motorboat sank near the BYC harbor Members went out in the clubs 14foot rescue boat to help retrive the careless boaters recalls several time during the early days when rescue boat filled with safetyconscious RYC members would have come in handy My boat used to leak pretty badly when it sat out there anchored without any protection at all said Steele remember when Hurricanc Hazhl came through went out that night to bail it out and when stepped on the forward end of the boat it just dipped right under The creation of the club was slow The little shack even tually fell down and an oil drumraft being built for the Chamber of Commerce summer carnival blew away before it was finished Trying to place fill in the harbor seemed an endless task and the first wharf built of recks trucked in by the original group disappeared before it became Useful Eventually however things began to fall into place and Steele and aSSociates completed the first arm and the BYCs docks in 1960 Steele and McLaren are the only two original members still sailing with the club Theresa lot of enthusiasm today Steele said Theres lot of young people getting around and thats good to see It always was hardworking club and it still is Were pleased at the way it going Incidentally that little boat which used to sway precariously in the waters off Johnsons Beach and fill with water so easily is still anchored in slip at the BYC Its the only boat left from the old club and its still qune good Steele says of his 75yearold craft friends and former is 251
