in Dudenhoffers hands By RICHARD THOMAS Of The Examiner In sense you might say Art Dudenhoffer has whittled away good part of his life But the results of his painstaking effort are about 30 pieces of intricately designed carvings some of which would make inscribing the Lords Prayer on pinhead look like piece of cake Currently on display at the Simcoe County Museum the collection represents 23 years of patient work by the 79yearold retired grocer from Orillia There are some standard car vings of candlesticks vases and other household items although beautifully done and scale model of 1929 Nash motor car with all moveable parts and even tiny treads on its wheels But the display several contains pieces such as un broken links of chain and carv ings within carvings all made from single length or block of wood Top Canadian milk producer Jeanally not an average cow rrrg The piece de resistance among these complicated puzzles is series of five moveable spheres of decreas ing size each contained within another The whole work is carved from single block Dudenhoffer says it took him five years to complete You wont see too many of them around he adds Member of the museums ad ministrative staff agree In fact they consider the entire collec tion unique Bertha Cameron the museums director says she was amazed when she first saw the collection couldnt believe anyone could be so creative she says The museums director says the consistency of the puzzles and their mathematical nature have convinced her if Dudenhoff er were young man today he could be fine ar chitect have seen lot of carvings but the fineness of these is what astounds me When you hold Jeanally Lynn Canadas top producing Holstein is the gem of owner Allan McLeans herd Examiner Photo our school board Relations course should complement home teaching This societys traditional and acceptable moral code should be part of the lesson when county children take the human relations program being proposed by the Sim coe County Board of Educaton says trustee Bill Murphy Murphy represents north Simcoe separate school sup porters as member of the public board on matters per taining to secondary schools The countys separate school board operates an elementary school program and the majority of its graduates then go into the public school system Murphy says the human relations program should complement the teaching parents offer their children at home He says parents are capable of teaching their children about the sexual and emotional relations between people Murphy also says parents and students should decide whether the program as whole or any part of it offends them and be allowed to withdraw entirely or par tially think the program is something that has to be very closely monitored and our teachers have to be very well prepared to teach it Murphy says the program ill be valuable in that cur BILL MURPHY monitoring needed riculum has been gleaned from material produced by experts in their fields There is concern among Roman Catholics and separate school supporters over the program Murphy says He says the concnerns are not dissimilar to those ex pressed by public school sup porters but Catholics have come to expect from their school system instruction based in religion The separate school system has definite Chris tian Catholic philosophy that permeates the whole them in your hand you wonder how anyone could dream them up modest soft spoken man Dudenhoffer makes it sound easy All you do is take block of wood and cut away what you dont want he says with chuckle He certainly doesnt consider himelf mathematical genius although he admits the pieces are quite puzzle for person to look at would get an idea in my head and just take pencil and draw it He first started whittling as he calls it in 1927 inspired by three wooden links his father had carved when he was little boy Each night after he had clos ed the store around pm Dudenhoffer says he would sit in his basement or sometimes upstairs in the living room of his Laclie Street home whittl ing with box on his knees to catch the chips story about milk cow in Simcoe County Big deal you mightwell say But wait minute this is nott just an udder tale its the record of champion who in one day of her illustrious career has produced enough milk to feed an average family for several months Her name is Jeanally Lynn sevenyearold Holstein who for the past two yearhs been Canadas reigning champion milk cow in her class Her rise to fame came in 1977 says owner Allan McLean deputy reeve of Oro Township when the HolsteinFriesian Association declared her NumberOne That year she produced 19229 kilograms of milk almost 36000 pounds And shes just finished another 305day record of 12220 kilograms about 26000 His only tool was jackknife and Whetstone to keep it razor sharp The chains were the most tir ing he says Each link took about one and half hours to complete And if you make one mistake on link its game over you start again he says Some of the pieces he ad mits were puzzles to him as well Id work for an hour or so and not even know what had done And all the time he whittled says Dudenhoffer he never once imagined he was creating work of art It never ran across me that way never thought anyone would ever see them outside the store For the past 30 years Dudenhoffers carvings have remained in his basement coming to light only after Howard Campbell chairman of the countys museum commit pounds McLean says TOP MARK Jeanally Lynn will probably top the 30000pound mark again this year even though she is only being milked twice day now he says When the record was set we were milking her three time day Jeanally Lynn was earmark ed as champion in her second year when she produced about 21000 pounds the owner says more than 13 times her own 1600pound body weight That year we couldnt get her to dry up cow usually goes dry about two months before calving after which she reaches top pro duction level An average cow produces about 14000 pouns of milk over 365day period so understan dably Jeanally Lynn is the gem of the McLean herd Swinging Eights By BRIAN BAKER Examiner Correspondent COOKSTOWN For the first time in its 14year history the annual dance of the Alliston Sw inging Eights Square Dance Club was held outside the curriculum and is the prime reason for its existence The whole curriculum and the whole attitude is bas ed in the beliefs of the Catholic church Murphy says Principal at St Josephs High School in Barrie Mur phy has also been teacher in the separate system He has been trustee for six years including three with separate boards in Lin coln County and Simcoe Murphy sits on several board committees that deal with the problems and issues ina specific zone of the coun yHe also sits on the commit tee that was formed to deal with the question of French high school at Penetan gushene think its important that the 5000 separate school students going into public schools have someone who understands their background speak for them We Murphy and his counterpart in Simcoes south end Joe Whelanl are pretty well aware of the philosophy of the separate board We hope to promote through the discussion and the administration of the public board the aspirations of those who have kids in the separate svstem Alliston area at Cookstown of them on display duringn local fair were Dudenhoffer competed against another whit tler who specialized in wooden flowers He said thought could carve but now know cant Dudenhoffer recalls proudly The five spheres were the last pieces Dudenhoffer carved in 1950 Since then he says he has all the time in which to do it but just havent got what it takes to do any more But what about carving some of the simpler forms such as animal sculptures never went in for that he says Only the things which looked the most impossible those were what wanted to do On her best day ever the Holstein produced 174 pounds of milk about 140 pints The secret to her success says McLean is in her breeding DAUGHTER Jeanally Lynn is the daughter of Starlight the farms top producing sire and although she has full sister who shows promise and several offspring of her own none of them will ever match her per formance says McLean Every once in while only do you get an exceptional cow like this Jeanally Lynns production is down to 60 pounds per day now says McLean but this is no reflection of her capacity or sign of slowing down Shes still good yet for another four or five years Shell always produce as long as we get her in calf ltJ the examiner Tuesday June 19 1979 tlecl from single block of wood The moveable spheres one inside the other took him five years to complete Examiner Photo Art
