known as DDT came under attack Today weed killer known as 24D is grabbing headlines and causing considerable concern The chemical is used by school boards across the province to eliminate weeds in playgrounds and schoolgrounds You pro bably use it on your lawn According to specialists at the ministry of agriculture its good harmless herbicide More harmless than aspirin they claim People especially in the Cobourngampbellford area of On tario are reluctant though to believe that They believe the weedkiller is toxic and this theyve been vociferous week danger to their children Because of demonstrating over the last Thats good The parents are taking the time to point out to the government that someone should be responsible for what happens in this province The parents want to know exactly what the herbicide is and what dangers it poses Unfortunately this sort of information is not readily available Environment Minister Dr Harry lariott says the chemical is safe if used properly and that to the best of his knowledge scientific data does not provide basis for nor support the claim that it is carcinogen llainly speaking he means hes not sure scientists are pro bany Sill per cent sure but no one has studied it long or hard enough to know for certain Thats good answer Better than the one offered by his specialists who are ready to accept the herbicide as safe bcaiusc the ministiy alloWs it to be used Thats putting the cart before the horse Dr larrott and his ministiy are facing more and more pro blems With chemicals in this province from merciin in Nor thern Ontario rivers and lakes to acid rain in the south Its modern fact of life When incidents occur such as the current controversy over 2511 it is imperative however for both sides to act rational ly and work toward finding solution No one is helped by parents deliberately exposing their children to toxic substances for the benefit of newspaper headlines or by ex perts issuing pronouncements that are easily misread That sort ofaction isjust plain stupid Dear Editor It has come to my attention that the traffic on Dunlop Street East has suddenly ceased which by the way kind of disturbs me but what December 1978 That was relatively low period in con sumer spending because retail sales taxes had just been restored to their earlier higher levels During the middle two quarters of last year when the temporary reductions in sales tax were having stimulative effect on purchases of socallcd consumer durablcs the rate of increasc in consumer credit at the banks was similar to the firstquarter 1979 rate It would be unrealistic to expect that the rate of borrowing and spending by consumers will continue throughout 1975 at the rapid clip of the first three months Whether there is recession or not con sumer spending seems likely to cool off if only because this particular activity tends to move up and down in well established cyv lical pattern WAY TO SAVE Economists poiiit out that when incomes rise as they do during inflationary times people tend to save more And from the point view of economic theory the purchase of ar or major appliance is an investment form of saving IThat isnt just By STEWART MaclEOI Ottawa Bureau Thomson News Service After just few weeks in office there is every indication that the new Conservative government is learning that the view from the inside is vastly different and far more complex than the view from outside It was so easy from the outside to say that Tory government would demonstrate Is raels right to exist by moving the Canadian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem And it was easy to promise the privatization of PetroCanada or the end of LotoCanada It also seemed relatively simple matter to chop personal taxes by $2 billion year The boatrocking list was long one And it remains there as total party commitment but Joe Clarks new ministers not to mention Clark himself are quickly realizing that some things are easier said than done The Liberals in power for 38 of the last 14 years had unexcelled experience in the complexities of implementing new policies For the new Tory government its crash course And already some Conservative ministers are beginning to display an uncanny likeness to the Liberals they replaced SAME STAND Remember how the Tories used to poke fun at Liberal cabinet ministers whh went into the seclusion of Gatineau Hills cottage for their think sessions Well guess where the Tory cabinet held its second meeting Thats right The same cottage At the cabinets first meeting the top item on the agenda was the West Coast THE REFERENPUM Marties book fascinating By DON OHEARN Queens Park Bureau Thomson News Service TORONTO Most people in Ontario today would know of Dr Morton Shulman As member of the legislatj re for Toronto High Park from 1967 to 1975 for eight years Dr Shulman was the darling of the prms and might well have received as much publicity as the other members of his party combined Now the doctor has written book about those years Member 01 The Legislature Fitzhenry and Whiteside 226 pages $1095 When he was around Queens Park it was never too clear just what slot you should put Dr Shulman in He represented the New Democratic Party but he was in no way an NDPer He had been lifelong Conservative and through his party connections had been made chief coroner of Toronto But he had made such fiefdom of the coronership investigating everything in which he felt there might be some wrong that the Robarts government fired him As reprisal he vowed to get into the legislature the NDP invited him in under its umbrella and he was elected But he was and still is an unrepentant capitalist In the house he made little effort to hide that he didnt think all that much of his party colleagues So he was oneman show separate and apart from everybody ALWAYS COLORFUL The word show is probably good one for the doctor What were supposedly the issues of the day couldnt have concerned him less He fought injustice And this was in justice on his terms The Mafia in these terms was very big injustice He spcnt lot of time on the Mafia Then there were cases of personal injury or death particularly if these happened to involve the Workmcns Compensation Board or the government directly or indirectly in some other way And above all he was against skullduggcry imagined It was constant crusade if that was what it was And it was all good show biz The doctor had his own private investigator on his payroll and had an always steady stream of causes to unveil and defend The unveiling and defending were always done with color and flair aiid above all were consistently entertaining ENJOY IT This follows Legislature Dont expect it to tell you what the life and activities of the normal elected representa tive are like house of 125 Dr Shulmans would probably have to be put away for safe keeping But if you want to know what one member with lance at the ready can do and in this case did then this book will tell you He describes some 50 of the incidents in his legislative career They or the book are not to be swallowed whole The doctor was always bit fanciful about his own importance and had considerable imagination about his impact He claims for example that John Robarts put off an election in 1963 because of him Mr Robarts would not be inclined to agree But the book is good read There are in it some examples of the more background of politics which not too often actual assumed or with Member Of The subtle become public David Lewis approached Shulman he claims to have him run NDP By all means enjoy it But read it to enjoy not as credo Backgrounder Hypnosis helps relieve anxiety LOS ANGELES AP ev Hypnotism onetime parlor trick thats becoming medical tool can help millions of Americans who are terrified of dentists says dental hypnotist The fear often is so intense dentists say that needed treatment is avoided toothaches are endured and even painless therapy becomes psychological ordeal Dr Richard Ruhe says hypnosis almost always relieves this dental phobia and can often reduce postoperative pain and improve healingaswcll Weve had patients who havent been to dentist in 30 years because of their fears and with hypnosis they are changed around to where they are completely comfortable with it the Huntington Beach dentist said in recent interview Hypnosis is finding modest but growing acceptance among United States dentists doctors and psychologists because of evidence that it can among other things remove anxiety reduce pain and help control bleeding according to William Hoffman Hoffman is executive director of the 3400 member American Society of Clinical Hypnosis based in Des Plaines lll We know of at least 1000 dentists around the country who are using hypnosis and Im sure there are more that we dont know about he says Psychologist Ernest Hilgard who has been studying the procedure for 20 years at Stanford Universitys Laboratory of Hy osis Research says hypnosis has proved va uable in number of medical procedures and has been accepted as legitimate treatment by the American and British medical associations It certainly is finding acceptance but there is not widespread enthusiasm for it he says The dentists have made about as much use of it as anyone What we do with hypnosis is change that front page We put positive page in there and build on that with positive experiences air
