our first horse We went camping on horseback Our trip started on the ninth line of Oro Township From there we ctit south through reforestation areas across Hwy 400 extension and along sideroads to Phelpston We then followed an old railway line towards Midland before we cut cross country parallel to Highway 12 and wéMfl the Trans Canada Highway Indian Reserve We travelled sections of tint mo and flit to Port Carling and up Muskoka Road to Rosseau From there we followed the Nipissing Rd to Orrville and then cut cross country to McKellar Our companions were It hand American Saddlebred tiained Bold One and It hand hall Arab called Fleet The 13o mile journey took us six days on fiorses Ill average condition four days work per week In the next two col iiiims Ill outline our journey louds tlireatetied rain as we carefully folded our spare clothes and rolled them into plastic covered bedrolls that first day of July After weeks of gathering equipment coiidi tioiung our horses and checking routes not even downpour could have dampened our spirits Bold One and Fleet waited swishiiig their tails casually at the occasional morning fly as we checked pack ropes and tightened guths By noon we were off Ilorses crowded fence Iraing horses crowded to the fence as yyirhililetl by The road gradually rose to sandy hills where environmen talists had reforested the eroding soil path winding through old deciduous gio lll beckoned us It We trotted under its opy our shadows mingling with those of beech and maple saplings Ilie fiorses scrambled up hill onto its gravel ridge as the path widened out into stitlltitilllllllllltm The horses picked their way along the contours of dry ditch In one area primroses brushed at their hocks their faded pink beautiful against the intense green of surrounr diiigeeigreeiis Again trees closed around us We were entranced by the stillness of breathless luly afternoon Speaker gazed in amazement For tfie first time we heard voices Bold One stepped from tfie darkened path onto sun drenched crossroad ur hid den speaker gasped iii amazement then offered to water the horses as we checked our route Fleet aiiil old One shared the first pail sipping together Illllll the emptying bucket narrowed lhen Bold One nudged Itleet out and finished it of Raising his dripping muzzle he scratched against Fleet packs Walking now we led the horses to where hikers path converged with an unused road allowance Across the even ing fields two hikers approachwl Hoping to reach our eanipside before drak we trotted along the needle carpetted trails toa sandy laiieway The sun was below the horizon its light dimly visible among the trees by the time we reached out hay and oat drop beneath the sheltering maples of friendly woodlot near lhelpston We unpacked the tent while waiting for the horses to cooi ott Eight hours under tack is quite strain for ever hardened muscles We wanted to release the saddle girths gradually Removing all pressure at once causes blood to rush to the horses back resulting 11 wells Ouickly we set up camp hanging bridles and packsties as high as possible and stopping every 15 minutes to loosen the girths little further Saddles off we hung the pads across rope Iiiie to dry Leather tack was stored in green plastic bags here it ould be safe from the evening dew Rubbed low ii horses muscles igorously we rubbed down the untacked horses massag mg witch hazel tlater salt and waterI into their backs and down their legs Massage loosens the back muscles and sup ples the tendons after longday under tack Fleet and Bold One feasted on hay and oats while we devoured cold meat cheese and melha toast We were foo lllttl Iocotik Bedtime quietly we listened as the horses touted the evening rustling around us et week
