Kramreithers 85minute doc umentary about the 1978 Miss Nude World Contest at the Imperial is both an adoles cent peep shoe and clumsy ex pose of the way young women are exploited by hucksters out to make an easy buck As peep show Mondu Nude aims for titillation by using the contest as pretext for filming naked women The contest at tracted about two dozen women some nudist some non nudist who parade in front of cameras during the various stages of the competition The ning sequences of the film ow the women playing volleyball and swimming underwater as the sound track pumps out light classical music This is softporn done with such little imagina tionand eroticismthat its boring And as an expose Mondo Nude cant master the courage of its own convictions We see the greedy and calculated com mercialism that motivates the organizers of the festivaIKramreithers idea of making this point is to use closeups of money changing hands as drivers pay their ad mission to the contest but its such shallow attempt at an expose that its hard to believe the films producer had any serious purpose in making the film Kramreither really doesnt care about using the contest to draw any conclusions about nudity or beauty contests Hes more interested in photograph ing naked bodies The girls in the contest come across as mostly mindlessbut wholesomedreamseekers who are willing to exhibit themselves to the cameras and the Ieering gazes of the people who pay their money to see the show One exception is young an thropologist briefly interview ed who tells us nudism is healthy and beautiful and im plies that she entered the con test for scientific reasons But the film doesnt explore this any further worse it doesnt attempt to portray the con testants anything more than Playboystyle mannequins bodies without minds or per sonalities Technically the film is bare Iy above amateur standards The editing is sloppy the camera work gimmicky and the overuse of wideangle
