Alta lorna Walsh one of three city of Barrie meter maids Meter maid enjoys iob By DENNIS LANTHIER Of The Examiner really enjoy my job The statement perhaps surprisingly comes from Lorna Walsh the head parking enforcement officer for Barrie She is one of three meter maids who make their rounds each day issuing parking tickets to meter offenders in the downtown area just enjoy it says Ms Walsh You get to meet different types of people from different cities Abuse is difficult and can be hazard but it does not phase Ms Walsh who is into her fourth year of patrolling the streets Some members of the public can be real ly ignorant she said You can smile and say good morning but lot of them will keep on walking by had chap that threw his groceries across the car at me she explained The guy had figured he could use the Simcoe Street parking lot all day Ms Walsh said she had one man who wiped the ticket in her face after being handed summons It upset me so much couldnt finish my beat she said Id only been on thejob for two weeks So many people say How do you sleep at night Or How can you have smile on your face she said You usually end up getting something said to you every day The work day starts at 845 pm each day and is usually finished for the girls by pm There is no discrimination between foreign licence plates and local plates she says Tickets are evenly distributed to all vehicles she said Meter maids will normally stop ticketing if the driver comes back to his car before the maid has finished writing it The maids are more strict however when cars are parked in illegal zones particular ly during rushhour Noone is prone to being left out even if you happen to be Ms Walshs daughter Her daughter was parked at Memorial Square on Dunlop Street during rush hour despite an earlier warning no parking was permitted $5 ticket was delivered About 600 tickets are dished out on weekly basis by the maids she said But occasionally motorists wont get their tickets and will only know they owe the city monley when they receive summons in the mai The problem Ms Walsh said is children lot of time kids will take tickets off cars and put them on other cars she said Sometimes theyll just throw them away Which is why the citys system of mailing courtesy cards is so good she said No matter what Ms Walsh said she would recommend the job to anybody Ive had bad days but dont
