MAX HAINES Crime Flashback 1979 Toronto Sun Syndicate The rage of doctor Susan Johnson did what many people do when they stroll over country bridge Shemeandering stream below Could that be human arm protruding from some newspapers on the river bank Susan who was vacationing in Moffat Scotland hurriedly returned to her hotel room where she told her brother of her suspicions He travelled the two miles to the bridge and confirmed his sisters gruesome find Then he called the police What confronted the authorities on that pleasant September afternoon in 1935 was not pretty sight The newspapers held the dismembered portions of not one but two bodies There were four individual bundles containing small segments of both bodies The victims were adult females Within the next two days additional parts of the same bodies were found in the general area of the original four bundles Complete sections of them had been cut away in an obvious attempt to hinder identification cyclops eye To add an element of mystery to the already strange discovery of two separate dismembered and mutilated bodies police found Cyclops eye in one of the newspaper bundles This phenomena known as Cyclopia is the fusing together of two eyes which appear as single eye in the middle of the forehead This malformation is extremely rare in humans but does occur more frequently in pigs In the case of humans it is usually accompanied by other deformities which result in death few hours after birth The name of course is derived from mythical race of bfe eyed giants whose chief occupation in Greek mythology was the manufacture of thunderbolts for strange and puzzling oddity to discover along peaceful meandering river in Scotland heavy rainfall had taken place in Sept 19 It was ascer tained that the bodies would have been washed away had they been deposited on the river bank before this date Police began their investigation by checking out all women reported missing since Sept 19 In this routine manner investigating officers found out that Mary Jane Rogerson nursemaid in the home of Dr Buck Ruxton had been reported as missing some three weeks before Miss Johnsons gruesome discovery under the bridge Police were also given to understand that Dr Rux tons wife had left him at approximately the same time Mary Rogersons mother identified several pieces of clothing found with the bodies as belonging to her daughter She had sewn patch into one of the garments herself Known to police Detectives were already well acquainted with Dr Buck Ruxton He had called on them several times in the previous three weeks to complain that his wife had left him and that he wanted her found and returned After the gruesome discovery he continued to call on the police claiming that rumors were being spread connecting him with the bodies found under the bridge Dr Ruxton stated that the rumors were ruining his practice and must be stopped Police were not ready to act Mrs Ruxton had not been identified as victim and while Dr Ruxton was strongly suspected of complicity in the murder police found it pru dent to wait until positive identification could be establish ed must point out that visual examination of the bodies was ruled out as method of identification The mutilatons to both bodies wer so extensive that it was impossible to identify the bodies in this way Born in Bombay India the doctor had changed his name from Bukhtyar Rustomji Ratanji Hakim to Buck Ruxton He received his medical degree from the University of Bombay and later specialized in surgery at the same university He had maintained comfortable home at Dalton Square Lancaster since 1930 whre he carried on rather successful medical practice Mrs Ruxton was the former Isabella Kerr She had been married once before in 1919 After meeting Ruxton she had her marrige dissolved and married the doctor in 1928 During the seven years of their marrige Mrs Ruxton and the doctor argued and fought incessantly Dr Ruxton was insanely jealous and often unjustly accused her of havmg affairs with other men The Ruxtons had three children aged six four and two Mary Rogerson their nursemaid was 20 Mary rarely left the Ruxton residence during the week Usually she spent her day off with her parents She had never been late for an ap pointment nor had she ever stayed out overnight Without In forming her family Neither Mrs Ruxton nor Mary were seen by anyone after Sept 14 1935 Three women other than Mary worked at the good doc tors home Mrs Agnes Oxley charwoman Mrs Elimbeth Curwen and Mrs Mabel Smith The work schedules of these women later proved to be of crucial im portance On Friday Sept 13 Mrs Curwen was told by Dr Ruxton not to return until the following Monday On Sun15th Mrs Oxley was surprised to find Dr Ruxton at her doorstep at 630 am advising her not to come to work He told her that Mrs Ruxton and Mary had gone on holiday to Edinburgh Mrs Smith was not due at Dalton Square until Monday Dr Ruxton had managed to dismiss his three employees leaving him alone in his home on Friday night Saturday and Sunday He appeared nervous All that weekend Ruxton scurried about To everyone who met him he appeared agitated and nervous As his car was in for repairs he hired vehicle and placed his children With friends When the charwomen reported for work the following week they found two upstairs bedrooms locked The house had undergone many changes over the weekend The walls along the stairway appeared to be blood splattered Rugs had been taken up and thrown into the back yard These too had large brown stains The doctor magnanimously gave the rugs to Mrs Oxley and Mrs Curwen He explained that he had severely cut his hand while opening tin of fruit ac counting for the bloodstains on the wall and rug He also told them that he was preparing the house to be redecorated The ladie worked hard all that week cleaning up To everyone even those who didnt inquire Dr Ruxton gave conflicting stories about his wifes and Marys sudden departure To some he stated that Mary was pregnant and that his wife had gone away with her to attempt to terminate the pregnancy He told others that the two women wer on vacation All week the charwomen cleaned and threw out rubbish One of them later remembered bloody piece of cotton wool which the doctor had her burn in the backyard together with bloody dress On Sept 19 at 730 am Ruxton brought his car around to the back door of his home As Mrs Oxley worked out of sight in the kitchen he made several trips upstairs and back down to his car After he left Mrs Oxley who was now joined by Mrs Curwen noticed that the two upstairs roomsthch hd been locked for five days were now open The two ladies entered the rooms and remarked on the vile smell emanating from them Next day Dr Ruxton mentioned the smell to the two women He suggested they buy bottle of eau de Cologne Mrs Curwen bought the cologne and gave it to the doctor Later on the fragrance was much in evidence in the odoriferous rooms Establishing an alibi It must be noted that in the two weeks between Sept 29 Dr Ruxton was busy little boy He was scurrying around the countryside trying to establish an alibi ministering to his patients placing his children trying desperately to have his house decorated and keeping three inquisitive women from finding out the truth while making up stories accoun ting for the absence of his wife and nursemaid All the while he was dissecting two bodies and disposing of the pieces It was all enough to tire man No wonder everyone who saw him during this period remembers his desperate ap pearance After the bodies were discovered near Moffat Dr Ruxton became frantic He contacted everyone he had seen in the previous two weeks asking them to support him in the story he would be telling the police Dr Buck Ruxton was arrested and charged with the murder of Mary Rogerson on Oct 15 1935 Two months later he stood trial for murder at the Manchester Assizes Once the arrest was made police swooped down on Dalton Square and almost took the house apart Floorboards and parts of the wall were removed to the Department of Forensic Medicine at Glasgow University Stains appearing on both walls and floor were identified as human blood Dr Ruxtons hand was examined It was established that fruit tin could not have inflicted such wound The severe cut was self inflicted by sharp knife local newspaper to which the doctor subscribed as found wrapped around por tion of Mary Rogersons body Also found with the body was section of sheet which matched perfectly with an other section found in the doctors house Although the doctor maintained his innocence it is believ ed that during one of his frequent fits of temper he killed his wife Mary Rogerson the nursemaid may have witnessed the crime and had to be silenced Dr Ruxton was found gu ty nd sentenced to death He was hanged at Strangeways ris on May 12 1936 But what of the mysterio Cy lops eye found with the two bodies Despite many far ries put forward at Rux tons trial it is mystery hic hasnt been solved to this day the examiner Friday June 1979 9A EVENING 600 129 NEWS HOLLYWOOD SQUARES DEFINITION IE POLKA
