friends says Toronto doctor Dr Diane McGilbon fam ily physician who specializes in psychotherapy says more women are coming out of mar riages with healthy desire to examine the mistakes they made and learn from them Theyre making their men took back with them and help ing them gain insights as well she says Lillian Messinger social worker with the Clarke In stitute of Psychiatry in Toronto who has counselled hundreds of divorced couples agrees that the trend toward married women working plus the increased interest of fathers in childrearing has made post divorce friendship desirable for both partners Mrs Messinger says more and more divorced parents are working toward what she calls emotional divorce meaning that they can separate out any hostile feelings towards each other in order to share their re sponsibilities as parents But any postseparation friendship can only take place after both persons have ad justed to their new status she says The adjustment usually follows pattern of shock de nial anger and finally depres sion START TAKING STOCK Only when all stages are com plete can people start taking stock clarify the reasons for conflict acknowledge their share in the breakdown and work towards any level of friendship with their exspouse Mrs Messinger says Dr Gail Robinson psy chiatrist at Toronto General Hospital says the key to devel oping friendship is mutual ac ceptance of blame But Larry Cash marriage counsellor says many people view divorce as rejection even if both were equally to blame for marriage break down One divorced woman Jackie Dineen 56 says that
