the issue openly dur ng its June 13 meeting Ministry of education of ficials claimed the French Language Advisory Committee and the board will discuss the problem further before the meeting is held next week Doug Penny assistant deputyminister said the board would then make its final posi tion known to Dr Bette Stephenson provincial minister of education Mnisters hand could be forced Ontarios minister of educa tion could he forced to take position in the debate over French language instructional unit for the French communir ty at Penetanguishene despit desire to have the local school board make its own decisions ministry official said Monday Normally tltc minister would not take position on position the board takcs but in this case the question has at tracted provincial attention and the minister would hc strongly urged to take posi tion on this issue Doug Penny assistant deputy ministcr said She could be forccd to take position he added The board has decided against building separate and distinct secondary school for the French students of Penetanguishene but will discuss the issue further June 13 before submitting its final position to Dr Bette Stcphcn son Ontarios minister of education Penny said He would not speculate on Stephensons reaction to con tinued refusal by the board to construct the school but said she would treat the issue as priority itcm Penny also said the minister may not take any action beyond the boards decision Simcocs French Language Advisory Committee is oppos ing to the board and says the only option it would accept would be distinct and separate school LEGISLATEI SCHOOL In situation similar to that of Penetanguishene in Essex County two years ago the pro vince legislated high school for the French community into existence The Essex school board refus ed to build the separate seconr dary school the French com munity had requested The ministry has also set aside $2 million for the French language instructional unit for 1980 While the $2 million would be enough to build small school the ministry main tains the money was earmark cd for the project because it ex pects some type of facility will be constructed Penny said Dr Stephenson wants the board to decide how and if that money is spent at all His comments came follow ing closed meeting between ministry officials and the local parties mittee The meeting number of prospective students would not justify construction costs DISPUTES FIGURES Simcoes French language committee dispute the boards figures and says the only option it would accept is separate chairman of the boards committee on the issue said late last week The board has made its position perfectly clear and weve made our position clear and we will not budget from it Dr Germain Gauthier for Oro council By RICHARD THOMAS The Examiner The controversial human relations course now being field tested in schools in Simcoe County posed thorny problem to Oro Township council Mon day as members became divid ed as how to express their feel ings on it to the Simcoe County Board of Education The problem first appeared in the form of request from Adjala Township for Oro to en dorse its resolution that the school board withdraw the pro gram immediately Councillor Clarence Smith and Allan McLean deputy reeve voted to endorse Ad jalas resolution but coun cillors Gail Swainson and
