At Geor ion convocation Scott gets medal Bonnie Scott an 18yearold business administration graduate was awarded the Georgian College founding chairmans medal at the con vocation exercises held Satur day at the college theatre The medal is awarded each year to the student who has maintained the highest academic standing during threeyear program Miss Scott earned marks averaging 86 per cent during her three years at the college She was president of the stu dent athletic association win ner of the Beggs Memorial Trophy and top female athlete of theyear During Saturdays convoca tion diplomas were awarded to 56 design arts graduates 66 ap plied arts graduates adult training graduates 122 business graduates and 85 graduates of the colleges technology division In his address to the business and technology graduates Saturday afternoon Georgian president Wayne Busch described them as part of wave of young people com pleting courses at community colleges throughout the pro vince and now viewing tonights Barrie general committee agenda Train horns to remain It appears Barrie residents will have to put up with train horns blowing in city limitsfor at least another year Don Kirkpatrick deputy engineer said today his depart ment has tried to deterime when Canadian National Railways will install railway signal lights at the Mulcaster Street crossing He said he has phoned CNR on almost daily basis as yet to no avail The city intends to apply to the Canadian Transport Com mission ICi to ban train horns within Harrie city limits The city is unable to because the Mulcaster crossing does not have signal lights It is the only unmarked train crossing in Barrie Kirkpatrick says it would be preferable to see work on the Mulcaster crossing after the Dunlop Street widening is finished Hopefully it can be done this fall said Kirkpatrick The city would then be able to apply to the CIC to ban the horns Just 31 items are on it Numerous administrative recommendations are due in cluding final decisions on traf fic light and street light in stallations in 1979 recommendation on exten sion of the parking meter zone along Dunlop Street for 150 feet east of Poyntz Street will be discussed Another discussion will centre around prohibition of parking on the west side of Mulcaster Street north of Codrington Street General committee will in vestigate installing traffic lights at the intersection of Dunlop and Mulcaster That areas is now closed due to road widening The committee will examine request by Robson Lang Leather Ltd to construct building for sludge dewater ing system The system would help ease the overflow at the Barrie lands fill site when industrial sludge is dumped there The committee will examine request from the downtown board to hold special promo Students hear about working Eastview Secondary business students spent much of the past week listening to resource peo ple from business and industry outline what they will ex perience when they join the workforce Speakers Week was organiz ed in cooperation with the chamber of commerce which provided Eastview with list of contacts During the year the students learn theoretical and practical concepts but often it is difficult for them to get feel for the working world says Tim Crawford director of business education at Eastview The intent of the week is to have the resource people outline for the Strike 11 started early this morning at Canadian Forces Base Borden Hercules transport aircraft carrying equipment and the first load of men of the Royal Canadian Regiment from Lon don Ont began arriving around am and will con tinue until about 10 am Tues day said Captain Richard Shaftoe information officer at CFB Borden Capt Shaftoe said the 500 or so men from the RCR represent the enemy who have taken over country friendly to Canada that will be rescued by about 1000 members of the air borne Special Service Forces based in Petawawa The SSF will begin parachute drops of men and equipment at CFB Borden at 930 pm Tues day but will meet no oppositon at the base itself said Capt Shaftoe By Tuesday night the enemy will be in Meaford just north of Owen Sound where the actual battle will take place he said The SSF will complete their airborne arrival at CFB Borden Boo rd chooses new director The Simcoe County Board of Education has appointed one of its superintendents to suc ceed Jack er Ed Sutherland management forester said today the insect has played major part in the decline of healthy red oak stands in Simcoe and Dufferin Counties The shredder eats the leaves weakening the tree Eventual ly limbs fall off and the tree dies Sutherland said the wood is not damaged until after the tree dies Then other parasites and rot destroy the wood Red oak is major tree species in Simcoe County said Sutherland About 20 to 30 per cent of timber stands are large ly composed of red oak Insecticides can be used to combat the shredder but there is difficulty in getting at them he
