for children which should attract an even wider audience for his music The Corner Grocery Store features 18 songs including traditional folk songs like Frere Jacques Swing Low Sweet Chariot and Goodnight Irene four French Canadian songs and dozen other fun songs which should appeal to children of all ages Raffis strengths are his clear straightforward singing style and sparse arrangements which invite accompaniment by young listeners Most of the songs are minute or less and the group of backup singers and instrumentalists hes gathered to make the record all perform with plenty of zest and good humor For childrens record The Corner Grocery Store is marvellously entertaining piece of work Raffi is obvious ly musician who cares about Childrens music Highly recommended Stephen Gauer Raffi The Corner Grocery Store Troubadour THE RUBINOOS Why is there story about this Berkeleybased pop band in the current issue of Rolling Stone Two reasons the band recently toured with Elvis Costello across the US and they happen to be one of the most polished most energetic pop bands now recording The Rubinoos have taken the best pop styles of the sixties in cluding the early Mersey sound and created the kind of ap pealing poprock thats com mercial without being mind less Lead singer John Rubin has voice as sweet and smooth as polished candy ap ple The bands sound is always tight punching out up tempo rock in 11 songs with titles like Wanna Be Your Boyfriend Fallin In Love and Hold Me The new album is nostalgia trip for anyone who grew up in the 1960s The vocal harmonies are polished and the music so appealing you cant resist singing along SG The Rubinoos Back To The Drawing Board Beserkley THE STAPLE SINGERS The new Staple Singers album is collection of their greatest hits recorded for Stax in the 19705 Roebuck Staples and his three daughters created the perfect union of gospel and pop in songs like Respect Yourself Ill Take You There and If Youre Ready The music is inspirational in the sense that it handles conventional themes with such joy and optimism you feel powerful surge Of hope after listening to the 12 songs on the album The bulk of the material is less familiar than hits like Respect Yourself but everything flows together well with brilliant vocals by the Staples and fine instrumental work by the Muscle Shoals rhythm section At their best The Staple Singers had few peers in the distinctive type of rhythm and blues music they performed The Stax collection pays tribute to their musical skill and devotion to the joys of music SG The Staple Singers Chronicle Stax JAMES TAYLOR The new James Taylor album is disappointing only because it doesnt break any new ground for the singersongwriter whose earlier work on albums like Sweet Baby James still measures up to the best pop music being produced today Taylors voice is still as smooth and gentle as ever and Peter Ashers production makes the most of batch of new material The new songs are competent without being strong enough to leave lasting im pression The best tunes rie best selling albums Live in Bukokan Cheap Trick last week Van Halen II Van Halen Breakfast in America Supertramp and includes the lament that the job takes young man as though Taylor feels hes getting too old to play the pop music game Brother Trucker pays tribute to the independent truck driver while Is That The Way You Look is tongueincheek 19505 style love song The two 19605 retreads on the album Day Tripper and Up On The Roof are performed without any noticeable imagination or en thusiasm SG James Taylor Flag Colum bia JOE JACKSON The latest British rock and roller works out of the Elvis Costello tradition of short pun chy songs featuring good pop melodies and tight instrumen tal work Jacksons vocal style is similiar to Costellos but hes smoother more relaxed singer and his music is free of the cynicism that characterizes most of Costellos writing Jacksons strong writer songs like Sunday Papers which satirizes British jour nalism and Happy Loving Couples which mocks modern The Police Jazz musician finds circus work constani challenge NEW YORK AP Keith Greene always thought hed be jazz musician That is until the circus came to town and he was asked to sit in as lead trumpet for few weeks Hes been doing it now for six years He also leads the 15 piece band of the Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus He was on vacation back home in North Carolina when he first took up circus life Before that Greene 33 had studied jazz at the famed Ber klee School of Music in Boston then worked in groups led by Art Mooney and Dixieland pia nist Billy Maxted had no idea Id ever be playing with the circus grins the trumpeter who has turned down offers to join the big bands of such jazz stars as Buddy Rich Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson The circus was not what had in mind for my future at the time wanted to play on the big band circuit and hoped some day Id have my own band or work in the studios But he found circus work constant challenge and enjoyed the camaradarie Also he wasnt on the road the yuelling string of onenighters and long bus rides that are the lot of big bands IIOME 0N WHEELS True he travels 29 cities this year But he doesnt pack and unpack check in and out of hotels He lives on the circus train in large spacious com partment complete with kit chen Its home on wheels he says You go to bed Sunday night you wake up Monday in the next town He spoke in an interview while recuperating in sense from the threehour shows he plays twice day thrice on Saturdays during Madison Square Garden engagement here Its said that circus music is the most difficult of all par ticularly for trumpeters You need lips of steel to handle the extremes in range and temho Youve got to play long loud and often very high Theres nothing to compare with it says Greene who on the tune Feelings soars to above high which for lesser trumpeters can cause hernias or at least lip blowout This IS definitely musi cians job Youve got to be in shape Weve had ambulances come in pick up four five guys heart attacks and strokes just from working thejob HIRES LOCALS His band has five fulltime members He hires 10 more 10 cal musicians in the cities the band plays Its particularly hard when youre working small towns There guy might only work the Elks Club one Saturday night month It circus mu sic is hard for them but usu ally tell them Take it easy takeiteasy If they get tired Ill help them play as much of their part as possible They play 300 pieces of music per show backing acts ranging from the Flying Farfans of Chile to Gunther GebelWil liams 20beast animal show Constant change is required There are show tunes rock songs waltzes and marches At present Greene is writing an arrangement of Give It One first played by highnote trumpeter Maynard Ferguson Of course its jazz piece for the jazzman who thought hed never stas with the circus that came to town riday Juno 1978 5A romance are as as anything Costello has done In fast rocker like Throw It Away Jackson goes back to Jerry Lee Lewis in vocal style and phras ing Best of all Jackson and his band are more sophisticated musically than Costello Fools In Love for example makes use of strong reggae beat to create stylish instrumental counterpoint to the lyrics Do The Instant Mash spoofs disco music while Look Sharp is classic call for watching out for the powers that be SG Joe Jackson Look Sharp and THE JACKSONS The new album by the Jacksons is highly polished well executed collection of pop music The album neatly bal ances commercially appealing disco tunes like Blame It On The Boogie Shake Your Body the current hit single All Night Dancing and Things Do For You with love ballads and slow and songs like Bless His Soul The title track Destiny opens with gentle acoustic intrumental and pro ceeds to plead for the natural life That may be stretching the Jacksons musical integrity little far theyre pop musi cians not philosophers but you cant fault them for produc ing music thats listenable and good to dance to The vocal har monies are as precise as mathematical formula and the instrumental work is firstrate SG The Jackson Destiny Epic DOMENIC TROIANO With Fret Fever Domenic Troiano returns to more com mercially oriented vein without sacrificing his unique manner of blending light jazz rock and blues His compositions on Fever are shorter than before with all but one cut running under four minutes Its an at tractive package which Troiano himself produced And it stands far better chance of being accepted commercially than his two previous releases Burning At the Stake for ex ample was more or less rush ed product slapped together shortly after the guitarist sign ed with Capital Troiano did not even have solid band at the time the album was perform ed with studio session men Its not by accident that Fret Fever leans toward simplicity Troianos lyrics themselves are 50 basic that theyre almost ir relevent But they nonetheless work well within the overall framework of the songs Four of the albums 12 cuts are instrumentals Michael Lawson Domenic Troiano Fret Fever
