answered in your column For personal reasons it has become important to me This ma not be up your alley but you seem to have pipelines everyw ere Why do peo le walk in their sleep At first when was told did this idnt belive it But after awakened in odd places out of bed few times took it seriously Once was awakened by the sound of my own voice was also talking in my sleep would ike very much to know why do it or why does anybody do it What can you tell me about sleepwalking Baffled In Boston Dear Baff Not much Sol corsulted The Ann Landers En cyclopedia and reread the piece on sleepwalking by Dr William Keller former chairman Department of Psychiatry University of Louisville Ky He wrote Sleep walking has been going on for centuries and its still anyones guess as to why some people walk in their sleep and others do not Its been attributed to many causes from being possessed by demons to eating too much for din ner If member of the family is Sleepwalker simple safety precautions should be taken such as locking windows and screens keeping the furniture in the same lace and the use of uncomplicated devices such as instal ing child gate at the top of the stairs One bit of superstition persists that something serious will happen to Sleepwalker if he is awakened suddenly This bit of folklore prt bany originated when someone startled Sleepwalker on bridge and he fell off Dear Ann Im 16 high school sophomore who enjoys knitting Ive made myself some pretty sweaters teacher complimented me on one of my creations and asked if Id make one for her She offered to pay me was thrilled bought the yarn the next day and had her sweater ready within week When handed it to her she said Thank you Its lovely not one word about being paid What should do DPTd Dear Send her bill for the cost of the yarn and add $20 for labor Next time someone says Ill pay you discuss the price openly settle on figure write it down and behave in businesslike manner 5mm Sock series continues By ERMA BOMBECK This is the second in threepart series on what happens to missing socks Todays column deals with The Cause According to woman from Ft Lauderdale Fla the an swer to disappearing socks is mathematically figured in subsets If you wash pair of blue socks with red stripe BLRD2 and pair of green angoras GRAm and pair of white tennis socks WHTl2 all three pairs would be called If had GRA2 and WHT2 then every element in is an element of Hence is suset of or CY If there is boldness in BLRD2 somewhere between fill and spin dry BLRDZ splits That answer made more sense than most of the others sent in to determine what happens to socks in the washer Most of the writers zeroed in on sex Like coat hangers and paper clips socks were believed to have an active sex life but only in water Some believed they married but they fooled around and often divorced in the dryer No alimony was involved Some stayed together through two or three washings but suddenly turned into swinging single One writer believed that socks went through sex change coming out another color large number embraced the Planned Obsolescence theory that is conspiracy between sock and washer manufacturers who incorporate sock disintegrators right next to the button crusher and sock sensors wich grind up sock and spit it out as lint The newer models even have reconstructed sock cycle which returns sock lost five years ago There was Sock Fairy theory for those of you who believe in Peter Pan the Cloning theory where for every pair of socks an extra one is cloned driving you crazy with three socks of one color and the Best Friend theory where your friend is secretly after your husband and both are trying to drive you whacko There is the Reincarnation theory where it is believed that sock returns in another form One woman swore that after five years of losing socks they all came back one day as sweater Some believed socks had an identity crisis and split Others leaned toward cannibalism One writer went for the Steve Martin theory where socks instead of getting high on detergent got small and disappeared great number believed socks to be migratory species activated by simply adding water And finally one writer blamed the United States gov ernment for programming washers to eat socks and keep the economy alive One blamed the Russians for undermining American womens stability Id have been disappointed if someone hadnt said that Tomorrow The Solution Pollys Pointers Linseed oil restores shine POLLYS PROBLEM DEAR POLLY have tried every polish know of on my laminated plastic kitchen
