aminasgtgsasf Roberts on film mean success Past rcles infuriate Moren0 By STEPHEN IAUER Of The Examiner In report released May John Roberts the former secretary of state for the former Liberal government makes some observations about the Canadian feature film Industry and the governments policy on supporting films The governments film policy is based on the belief that healthy commercial sector is an essential condition to suc cessful feature film industry says Roberts We believe that Canada has the necessary creative talents to make films that Will popular and successful not only in Canada but also In international markets Given the high cost of making feature films success in markets outside Canada IS In most cases essential if Canadian film is to be commercially profitable No argument there And Roberts is correct when he says that the Canadian Film Development Corr poration and the 100 per cent tax allowance have helped increase the number of films made in this country Last year the CFIC spent $78 million to create $46 million worth of film pro duction But its one thing to say film must appeal to North American market and another to say as Roberts does in his report that the Canadian content isnt suffering as result The films that the CFIIC helps finance are really North American films not Canadian films Unlike such films as Duddy Kravitz or Mon nclc Ane toine these co productions films like IOIIN ROBERTS Murder by Decree and Silent Partner could have been made in Los Angeles or New York They say nothing about Canada They dont pro ject any sense of what liv ing in this country means They dont tell us anything about ourselves Maybe thats little too idealistic But good Canadian films can appeal to larger market Making movies is big business and always has been but that hasnt prevented creative directors writers and performers from making films that try to aim little higher than the lowest common denominator The liberal governments policy has encouraged movie production at the expanse ofa truly Canadian film industry It will be interesting to see what approach the Progressive Conservative government takes towards the Canadian film industry Short some flair for comedy But Fonda comes across as thirdrate imitator of John Wayne spouting tough guy cliches as though he really believes them Shields whos status as an ac tress gets shakier with each film she makes is so mannered and so amateurish she isnt believable for moment The role of Wanda properly cast could have provided strong central focus for the film but Shields cant sustain the characterization for the length of one scene let alone the entire film Fonda who directed the film shows some skill at conveying the seedy decadence of small town Arizona in the early 19505 The camera western cliches and adventure story retreads leading to deus ex machina ending involving super natural Indian spirit The en ding is pure fantasy everything else in the film is rehash of ideas stolen from much better films The most interesting characters the heroes meet at the bottom of the Grand Canyon an eccentric birdwatcher Sereda Darden and seduc tive Life photographer Fiona Lewis Unfortunately Darden dies 10 minutes after we meet him and Lewis disappears after two brief scenes Thats shame because Fon da and Shields are too weak to carry the entire film When they drive off into
